Solved Windows 8.1 no sound help

Hi this is my first post I just upgraded to windows 8.1 today from XP all went smooth but I cant seem to get any sound. The speaker icon in the bottom right of the screen has red cross through it and says no speaker or headphones are plugged in I have tried two different sets of headphones and my surround sound system and still says the same thing. sound was working fine before upgrading from xp

Drivers, drivers, drivers....

? Should I have posted this in drivers or is that part of the problem I am having?

Ok will keep trying and see what happens.

Just done 14 updates and still the same still coming up no speaker or headphones are plugged in. when I click on the speaker icon it comes up with a trouble shooter and at the end it says the speaker headset or headphone is unplugged.

First check in Device manager if there's anything for sound or anything Unknown device or with yellow mark.

fixed ended up finding a Realtek High Definition Audio Driver for Windows 8.1 from a Lenovo website and it is all fixed now

Bravo, hardware can't work without drivers, it's just matter if they are built into OS or not. Check Device manager, you might be missing some other drivers.
