Microphone levels too high and auto resets

I am using a USB headset with a microphone (Logitech G35). As the title suggests, my microphone levels are too high. My microphone picks up almost everything, especially keyboard- and mouseclicks which people have complained about. Whenever I try to adjust the microphone levels to something lower, for example 18dB instead of 24dB, it will reset back to 24dB almost as soon as I start to speak. I have tried to change the levels both in Windows Sound Settings and in the driver for the headset. I have tried multiple dB values, not only the one in my example.

    I am using Windows 8.1.

Anyone knows what is causing this and a possible fix?
