Win 8.1 Pro x64. I've been using a USB dac for the past few weeks that when I change interconnects or reconnect the USB side, it's been hit and miss whether or not the dac is immeidately seen by Windows Sound. Either reconnecting or reinstalling the driver has solved it. Since yesterday, however, it's all been miss; that is, Windows is throwing up the USB device can't be seen message when I connect it with its USB cable or another USB cable. Among the tests I've tried is swapping in another dac, call it Dac B, and that is being seen.
Before I return the dac for testing, its developer (a Mac user) would like me to do one more test to assure it's not a software issue: take the dac's driver out of play and use the default Windows sound (16/44). I've uninstalled the driver - it wasn't seing the dac anyway - but am not sure how to do the test since the CP>Devices shows "unknown USB device" and "driver error." When I choose Realtek Digital Output in Sound ("Ready") and play a YouTube video, it looks like it's playing (in Sound), but there's nothing coming out of the speakers. What am I missing here? Could there be another reason why the dac isn't being seen by Windows? I did switch hubs the USB connectors are plugged into in the back of the computer (the cable has separate power and data lines on the computer side). Thanks,
