Default audio changes when monitor in plugged in.
Hey guys. I am having a problem. I use my laptop and i plug it via hdmi into a monitor when I am at home, but i unplug it to take it with me to class. Whenever I plug the monitor in it defaults audio settings to the monitor and not to the laptop speakers, even though the default setting is laptop speakers. I have to change the default every time. I have Intel audio drivers installed (6.16.0.3131). It didn't do this until I installed the Intel drivers. Can anybody help me find the setting to fix this? Thanks.

The problem is that Windows, in most PC's, will automatically set the default audio playback device from the (PC) Speakers to HDMI when an HDMI cable is plugged in. This is a common complaint and an issue that Windows needs to fix as more and more users now have PC monitors with an HDMI connection and it becomes a "problem" with the sound.
Only thing you can do is manually change the default audio playback device back to the "Speakers" so you get sound in the PC's speakers.

Hmmmm. I never had it do it before the Intel audio update though, which is odd. I'll keep poking around in audio settings. Basically they need to completely overhaul windows 8 though.

If it worked differently, there was a "problem" before. Windows (Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8) works, or is supposed to work, the way I described it.

It probably was borked. To be honest I haven't had one stable install of Windows 8 and I'm on my ninth install.

I have two desktops with dual boot Win 7/Win 8.1 and both are very stable and work without problems. One of the desktops is my recording studio system and my recording studio software (Sonar X3) works perfectly on both Win 7 Home 64 bit and Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit.
Does Win 8 (or 8.1) work OK when just the basic OS and correct device drivers from HP are installed? Could be some installed application or user tweaking that is causing the problems, assuming there is no hardware problems.

Lol no. Stock with just drivers is horrible too. Bad mouse input due to hardware problems. Touchscreen issues. Graphics driver issues. Bad fan control. The list goes on. Nothing but problems I've had with this thing

I'm using the Intel HD 4000 video on my i7 3770 CPU and no problems, although I don't use HDMI. Is the HD4400 the correct video for your i5?

Yea it's the 4200u processor. It freezes whenever the fan turns on and the audio becomes distorted.

That suggests some hardware or power problem.

I thought so too but honestly I'm not sure because before the I updated the bios it would just throttle itself and stay around 90c and the fan wouldn't turn on.

Been in there hundreds of times. There is only one option that says "fan always on" which means the fan runs constantly. I think the laptop has an issue reading the temperature sensor

I'm honestly not sure about anything with this computer. I need it for another four weeks for school and then I'm sending it to HP
