When I record sound from CD, Website etc. (with Audacity or other software) it records the sound via the computers loudspeaker and from that via the computers microphone.
But I want to record the sound directly from the sound card (or whatever it is).
I know its possible, I have done it befor. But I have reinstalled my pc, and now I cannot remember how to do it.
Can someone help me?

You need the Stereo Mix (could be called System Mixer) in the Sound Panel, recording section.

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. Click on the Recording Tab. The Stereo Mix should be shown and set as the default recording device. If the Stereo Mix is not shown, RIGHT click in an empty space in that panel and then click to Show Disabled and Disconnected devices. Stereo Mix should now show up and you can enable it and make it the default recording device. There are a few PC's without this capability, most have it.

See my screen shot:

In addition to fireberd's suggestion, if you are trying to use Audacity to record sound (directly from the source over the internet), you must set the option as shown in the image below:

Hope our information is helpful.

Thanks A LOT to both of you, it works!
my2cents, seems like you know Audacity. Mine has begun to show/monitor the sound level with a delay of app. ½ sec. Do you know where I can change that?

Hmm... I don't know it that well. Can you show us a screenshot of what you are looking at? Could it be due to a slow (or buffering) internet connection? Mine is 56/11 (down/up respectively).

During recording you see like a wave running over the screen with varying height, depending on the loudnes. And this indicator is deláyed about ½ second, also when i record from a cd.
The red vertical line shows "where we are", and you can see that the wave come a little after it.
It's not a big problem, just look strange, and it was correct earlier.

Ok, thanks for responding. Unfortunately, I have never experienced the issue you are describing, and since a picture won't help me (per your advisement), I don't know what else to suggest at this point. Good luck from here. Hope we were able to help a bit.

I thought I had removed "A screen shot won't help you", and as you can see, I have uploaded a screen shot, which shows the problem. But it's not a big issue at all, just annoying.
But you helped me solve the big problem, so thanks.

I have a recording studio (using Sonar X3) so I don't use Audacity either, although it is a good audio recording program.

I notice you are recording at 32 bit. 16 bit is "CD Quality" and all that you need. Having to convert the 16 bit audio to 32 bit may be causing some of your delay (latency). If you were to burn a CD of what you recorded, at 32 bit, it would have to be converted to 16 bit to burn an audio CD.

I don't see any 1/2 second delay so I'm missing something here; however, what I do see is that your recording level is exceeding the current scale setting of Audacity. Now, you can approach this in two different ways:

1. Increase the scaling in Audacity
2. Turn down the volume on your speakers a bit.

This is my last response so no need to respond back because I'm out of ideas. Good luck.

I just did a test recording with Audacity. The red line in mine is ahead of the actual recorded waveform. What you are seeing is correct (normal).

Problems again

You need the Stereo Mix (could be called System Mixer) in the Sound Panel, recording section.

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. Click on the Recording Tab. The Stereo Mix should be shown and set as the default recording device. If the Stereo Mix is not shown, RIGHT click in an empty space in that panel and then click to Show Disabled and Disconnected devices. Stereo Mix should now show up and you can enable it and make it the default recording device. There are a few PC's without this capability, most have it.
See my screen shot:
Now I can only see Headset Microphone and Microphone 2 times - no matter what I try :shock::shock:
