    rear speakers not working

    all plugged in
    new computer
    drivers up to date
    set to quadraphonic
they were working yesterday but they appear to have stopped on their own.
the test speaker option worked at first but now they dont
when i click the speaker icon to test on the sound playback options tab the level indicator shows green as though they are working but there is no sound coming out of the rear speakers
is there some extra setting im missing?

Double check the audio cables going from the PC to the speaker central amp. Also check that they are set to quadraphonic in control panel > sound. Select speakers from the list and click Configure. It's the same panel shown on the left in your screen shoot.

it seemed to be a realtek setting. when i unplugged and then plugged the speaker back in a second list of check boxes appeared and i tried checking off rear speaker out they came back on. i could have sworn i already had this checked off but some other setting i messed with must have changed it.

Stuff like that happens sometimes. Windows can switch it to just the two and so can the RealTek software. It never hurts to check both places. You got it working so all is good, for now.

now it seems like only background noise is coming out of the second set of speakers. is there a way to make all speakers play the same sound? i already tried toggling the speaker fill option on and off and that didnt fix it. only the test option seems to make any significant noise come out of these speakers.

Speaker fill is how I did it I think. One of my speakers died so I'm back to just stereo.

Try setting to 5.1 or.7.1 .some streams can't differentiate good enough. I technically have quad ( 2 times stereo but with woofers incorporated in each set ) and some movies used to play only background sounds on one set (like music and sound effects) and front only speech until set to 7.1. Speakers not plugged in will be grayed out.
    Surround Speakers set to On.

there is some sound coming out but only on certain music and its echoed and delayed
there are no "effects" on except for speaker fill. it sounds like background stuff and i want all speakers having the same sound
now i am also having problems opening the realtek audio manager, i cant figure out how to open it.

If you are hell bent to have rear speakers running too and don't care about separate controls for them, you can use an audio splitter " http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2272476" like this as a stop gap measure. It will give you exactly same sound front and back.
