Here is my setup:

Motherboard: P8Z77-V LE PPLUS
Processor: i5-2300
Source: Onboard Graphics/Audio (HDMI)
Receiver: Harmon Kardon 2600

No matter what I do, Windows v8.1 will not play anything out of my Harmon_AVR HDMI source.

I installed Windows 7 using the exact same setup and it works immediately.

Oddly, the onboard speakers work in Windows 8.1, but I cannot get any sound through my receiver.

Any suggestions?

I have that motherboard in my backup system, with Windows 8.1 Pro, 64 bit.

I see you are using the HDMI output and not the regular PC audio output.

That is governed by the Video card's audio out. Whatever video you are using, either the Intel HD Audio or if you have a separate video card, that card's sound drivers are where the problem would appear to be. Make sure you have the latest video drivers as Windows 8.1 specific drivers are needed in some cases for proper audio operation. Older Windows 8 drivers can be a problem.

I have two desktop systems, my main recording studio system that uses an Intel i7 3770 and its graphics and my backup system with the ASUS motherboard and an i5 3550. I find the i5 3550 video lacking and installed a separate video card (with its own HDMI sound).

Yeah, installing the RealTek driver was the first thing I did. I also uninstalled and reinstalled them a few times. I gave up on the situation and went back to Windows 7 --- worked immediately.
