No windows start up sound after Cold boot

    Hey There,

I am new to this forum and I though this would be the best place to get some feedback with my problem im having, if anyone could give me some feedback that would be great!

I have had Windows 8.1 64 bit in my computer for about two months now and everything was working fine..ive noticed last month that after one of the updates (possibly Skydrive icon update) that my windows start up sound wasn't working when I start my computer from a cold boot. Interestingly the sound does work again once im in the OS and I do a restart. I went into sounds and made sure the check mark to play start up sound was clicked btw.

Does anyone else have this issue? or is just me? because it was working fine before one of the updates.

(Also just to note that I set the option to boot directly to desktop and also I changed my user account where i dont see the login screen and it bypasses the password to boot quicker into the desktop.)

*** the reason why im wondering this is because I have a dz77ga-70k intel motherboard and when I cold boot im noticing a post code 40 on the motherboard when usually it should be 00...funny part is that just as I mentioned before with audio once I do a restart it goes back to normal with a 00 post code. I think its related to an update and something to do with windows not starting correctly from a cold boot.

If you are getting a post error code, that suggests some type of hardware problem. A windows update would not cause POST (Power On Self Test) error. According to the Intel manual there is no 40 error code, they list 3F and then 41?? but the 41-4F is "CPU initialization".

On a cold boot, the POST is run, but on a Windows restart it is not run.

However, I wonder if its the Windows 8 "fast start"? I had a problem (different than yours) with the fast start and have a post on how to disable this. Try that and see if makes a difference. Fast start bypasses some of the BIOS initialization, but if you just do a "restart" instead of cold boot the fast start is not used.

that worked! it was the fast boot being enabled.

Cool. That seems to have caused several problems. I'll keep your sound problem in mind.

I too have noticed this since the last round of windows updates, I lost my windows logon sound when booting from a cold boot, but do have it when I restart.
I do use the Windows Fast Start so that may be it, not a big deal really but it used to work using Fast Start until that last round of updates...

I suspect the OP's post code error is not related to the above issue.

I was just coming here to post a topic on this same thing - not getting the logon sound from a cold boot, when I saw this thread.

Here is a short description of the fast boot. Depending on what it is caching on a given PC could account for items such as sound on startup.

The goal of Fast Boot is pretty obvious from its name - Windows 8 boots up faster than previous versions of the operating system ever did. To accomplish this feat, Windows 8 doesn't totally shut down when you click the Shut down command. Instead it only partially shuts down and partially hibernates. This is the Hybrid Shutdown part of the equation. Then, when you turn on your computer, Windows 8 starts very quickly because it only has to partially boot up and partially wake up. This is the Fast Boot part of the equation. Fast Boot also gets a boost from the efficiency of today's hardware; namely UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) and multi-core processors.

Agree, however I am inclined to believe something in that last round of updates, caused the sound to go away while using Fast Boot. I built this system in Dec, and always had the logon sound from a cold boot until then...

Again not a big deal for me, I can live with it, just one of those things I wonder about - I do like using Fast Boot as I have UEFI and an SSD.

I have a fast SATA III OCZ Vertex 4 SSD (and UEFI BIOS) and the short time it saves is not worth it for me. Plus, I have a dual boot and the fast boot will bypass the dual boot options.

Hmm I will have to give a try without fast boot enabled, and see if there is any noticeable difference in boot time for me - as I too have a pretty fast SSD...

Well I must say, if it added any time to my getting to the desktop I can't tell it, maybe a second or so at worst. And I have my windows logon sound back. Guess I will just leave Fast Boot disabled...

    Thanks,
