Audio routing issue

First of all, i'd like to mention that while I'm fairly tech savvy, I know next to nothing about audio stuff.

Now, I have an Xbox 360 that i connect to one of my computer monitors via HDMI cable. I'd like to display on the monitor, but have the audio routed through the monitor, to my pc, where i can use my desktop headset to listen to the game audio.

Now, what I've done is jury-rig it to work by connecting the audio out from my monitor to a mic port on my desktop, and then "listen" to that microphone from my pc. It works, but there's a ton of audio static, which is disheartening.

So, i ask, is it possible to do this better, or is this about as good as I'm gonna get?

If you are going to do it like this, you should change the input port (if you only have one on the machine) to line in instead of mic.

If you have both mic and line in ports, take the cable out of mic port and put it into line in (typically blue color.)

That will fix it all up for you.

Make sure you are using a 3 wire cable, so it works in stereo. The ends of each side of the cable should look like this:

Notice that there are 3 distinctive parts to the plug end. One near base, one in between black lines and one at end.
