Windows 8 clean install on new pc. No sound.

Ok. I recently bought a gaming rig off of trade me (ebay like site) and it came pre installed with windows 8 (not 8.1) Now that I've got it all up and running smoothly I have no sound.

the screen im using is connected via an HDMI cord and seems to be the audio device that my computer is picking up descpite the fact that the screen has no speakers. It doesn't seem to pick up any headphones I connect and installing drivers hasn't changed a thing, it tells me they are all up to date. Codecs have not helped either.

I have tried disabling the screen as a sound option and asking it to show disabled and disconnected audio devices but only the screen comes up. Help please.

Windows can only have one default audio playback device. If an HDMI cable is attached to the PC, it will automatically set the HDMI as the default audio playback device. In cases such as yours where there is no speakers in the display, you will have to manually change the default audio playback device to the "Speakers" (the PC's sound device).

That is done in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel playback section.

This is a common problem with more and more people using HDMI interface computer monitors. At some point, Microsoft is going to have to change the way it automatically sets the audio playback devices and have a user option for how it sets it.

Thankyou, the problem now is that I cant find my headphones anywhere in the playback section even when I tell it to show disconnected and disabled devices. The screen is the only thing that shows up.

Please fill in the "My System Specs". It will help us to try and help you. e.g. what you listed did not list the actual Gigabyte motherboard. If you look at my system specs, you will see I have a similar system with a gigabyte motherboard and an i7 3770.

If nothing is showing up in the Sound Panel Playback section, check the Device Manager to see what it shows for sound devices.

Device manager is only showing the screen as well. I know that my motherboard is the Gigabyte ga-z77x-d3h model. how do I pull up the more specific stuff for my other components?

you could use directx to show system info .

go to start ,search ,type in dxdiag.exe ,and click to open it ,click save all info and it will create a text file with all the info, system info is at the top of the file

Speccy is what I use for system specs. Free download Speccy - System Information - Free Download

Just be careful as many downloads now include options for toolbars, antivirus scans, etc. Make sure you look at the screens and uncheck all the extra garbage.

Also please post your screenshots of the Sound Panel playback section and your Device Manager sound section.

Thanks for all the help guys but I've managed to solve it. For some reason the audio was turned off in the computer system bios, so I just had to go to that menu and turn it on. All is well, Thank you very much for trying to help.

If you let Windows install the generic basic function "HD Audio Codec" for the sound driver, you should go to Gigabyte and get the correct sound driver. The correct driver supports more functions.
