Got a new computer with Windows 8. I put a music CD in the D drive. Nothing happens. I click on DVD RW Drive (D), and it shows the tracks on the CD. I check Track 1, go up to Music Tools and click Play. A play button appears but it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

What type of audio CD do you have? A commercial audio CD or one that someone burned?

If its not a commercial audio CD, try one of those if you have one.

Does other audio play OK?

As this is a new PC, if it has never worked, best to contact the PC vendor (or where you bought it) for support. If there is a hardware problem only the vendor can take care of it under warranty.

Also, please fill in the "My System Specs" so we know what hardware we are dealing with.

I've tried both commercial and burnt music CDs. They won't play unless I don't know how to play them. Audio from the Internet works all right.

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 20" AIO model io2020-4668BK. No list of specs came with it.

With the CD in and WMP open, select a song and click play. Then right click your sound icon, then click on "open volume mixer, check to see if windows media player is muted. If so unmute it.

I don't know what WMP is. I put a check by the track on the CD and clicked play. I don't see anything that looks like a sound icon. Where is it or what does it look like? The "play" button is dim or however buttons look when they are not operable.

WMP...Windows Media Player...

The sound icon is at the bottom right of the task bar....next to the clock. It looks like a speaker.

Okay, thanks, I see the sound icon. What do I click to open WMP? I don't see anything so I assume it's hidden somewhere. I clicked on open volume mixer, then system sounds, and don't see anything about muting.

Go to your start screen...aka metro screen....the one with all the tiles... look for the one that says window media player. Make sure you have your music CD in.

There is no tile for WMP. There is one for "Music." I clicked it, and it says this app needs an update and to go to the store to get the update. I assume it's referring to WMP? It won't play as soon as I buy it because it needs an update?

I've got to connect the new computer to the Internet now (I've been posting from my old one) to get to the store.

When I clicked on go to store, it started installing a bunch of updates. It has said "installing 7 updates" for several minutes now, and Music or WMP is not one of them. They're things I don't even have any interest in using. Meanwhile when I click on the Music tile, it still says I need an update, when I click for it I get the message that 7 non-music updates are still being installed.

From what you've said, am I correct in assuming that WMP does not start automatically when you insert a music CD? You have to go to the Start Screen and open it?

No...the music tile is and app....you want the WMP tile. On the metro screen just start typing, type windows media player and you'll see it. Or right click anywhere on the metro screen and select all apps and look for windows media player...it's alphabetized so look in the "W" section...

Okay, good, I found WMP by typing on the Start Screen. It prompted me to choose my recommended settings, which I did. This took me to the Music Library, which is empty. I went back to the File Explorer, if that's what it's called, that shows what is on the inserted CD. I checked it, clicked on Play, but the play button is still inoperable. I went back to the Start Screen to see if there is a tile there now for WMP and there isn't. So I don't know what good it did to find WMP.

I went back and clicked on WMP through the Start Screen. This time it told me to insert a disc, which I did, and it played. So I guess that solves the problem. I guess to play a CD, I must open WMP first and it will prompt me to insert the CD as it did this time.

Thanks for your help.
