Hi
Ok I am a Win 8 newbie previously using Vista but the wife bought me a new laptop with Win 8 on. OK my problem is when I try to play DVDs the drive whirrs but nothing happens i.e they dont play. What settings do I have to change to get them to play automatically. I have been into Control Panel and tried to set up Auto Play. By the way software, music, pictures on discs no problem just will not play DVDs.
Thanks in advance to those who will help.

Thanks to all those who replied. You would think Microsoft in all its wisdom would put some form of software in Win 8 to play DVDs. No wonder there is complaints from computer manufacturers that they are not selling products because it has Win 8 on. Roll on Win 9 maybe that will be better.

Making Windows Media Center available in Windows 8 - Building Windows 8 - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

Given the changing landscape, the cost of decoder licensing, and the importance of a straight forward edition plan, we’ve decided to make Windows Media Center available to Windows 8 customers via the Add Features to Windows 8 control panel (formerly known as Windows Anytime Upgrade). This ensures that customers who are interested in Media Center have a convenient way to get it. Windows Media Player will continue to be available in all editions, but without DVD playback support. For optical discs playback on new Windows 8 devices, we are going to rely on the many quality solutions on the market, which provide great experiences for both DVD and Blu-ray.

Yeah...I have WMC, I got it when MS was promoting Windows 8 and giving away WMC for free. The only down side to WMC, is that it doesn't play Blueray. For that one has to go buy software to do so or a Blueray player for the PC that has the software with it.
