No audio to HDMI monitor speakers

My friend connected an external monitor to his Sony laptop using an HDMI cable. The problem is that there is no audio from the external monitor speakers. The sound still comes out of the laptop speakers. When I look in Playback Devices, I see what appears to be the speakers as a device (can't remember exactly what is was called, but it was a somewhat vague name like "audio device"), and I've tried various settings, yet I can't get sound from the speakers.

So my question is, does an HDMI connection on a monitor support audio, or does he need to get a audio cable and use the green audio jack that is on the monitor, which I thought was just needed with the VGA connector.

    Thanks

It depends on what is available on the specific PC. Normally, both Video and Audio are on the HDMI port, and when a cable is connected to the HDMI port Windows automatically changes the default audio playback device from the "Speakers" (The PC's sound card) to the HDMI as the default audio playback device.

Since this is not happening, either the incorrect video driver (which includes HDMI audio) is not installed or the PC does not have the capability.

About all I can offer without the specific Sony PC Model Number so we can research what it has.

My wife's older HP laptop did the same thing....what I ended up doing was right clicking the sound icon, selecting playback devices and manually selecting the HDMI output. Now my 2 year old Samsung picks it the connection with no problem at all.

Yup, amazing at it sounds, sometimes Windows just doesn't work as intended.

Right click on the speaker down by the clock, choose "Playback Devices" and right click on the HDMI output (might be called something else but you should be able to figure it out) and set as default device.

Thanks for the replies. I did try the above when I was working on it, did not help.

I emailed my friend to get his computer's model #, and he says it is working OK now. I won't see him for a few days to find out what changed.
    Thanks
