Windows 8.1 "No audio devices are installed"

Hello, fellow... meh, I don't know.

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
Processor: AMD FX-1400 Quad Core
RAM: 8.00 GB
Storage: 1.73 TB of 1.81 TB available
System Type: 64-bit Operating System, x64 based processor
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A while ago, my PC was having some lag issues that made the computer practically unusable. I found out in msconfig that I had almost all services running. I disabled many of the services, and I made sure not disable the necessary ones (i.e, Windows Audio.) I restarted my computer and there was a red circle with a white "X" over the audio icon. I clicked on the icon. A window named "Playing Audio" opened. On the window was a bar similar to the one shown while loading/downloading something. Above the bar said "Detecting Problems" and then "Scanning for hardware changes...". This went on for about 10 seconds. After this, the window changed. At the top in blue was "Troubleshooting has completed". Under that was "The troubleshooter made some changes to your system. Try attempting the task you were trying to do before." In the center of the window was "Problems found-Hardware changes might not have been detected".
In the search bar, I typed "Manage audio devices". When I opened it up, the window told me that there were no audio devices installed. I have checked in Device management under "sound, video and game controllers" That I have sound drivers installed (AMD High Definition Audio Device & High Definition Audio Device.) I have tried multiple times to uninstall/reinstall the drivers to no avail. Any and all help is appreciated/accepted. Have a nice day :thumb:
The first thought, have you tried reinstalling the Sound Drivers? either from the motherboard vendor or if you have RealTek you can get the latest from RealTek and install that.
I bought a brand new HP Envy 14 with Windows 8.1 installed. Everything worked great until suddenly the audio stopped working. I clicked on the speaker icon which is supposed to start the services required to play audio but it went into trouble shooting mode and told me "one of two audio devices did not start". Like every thread I have read on this, it was the "Windows Audio Service" device. I checked everything, BIOS is ok, all services in "Services (local)" are properly enabled. I tried to start WAS from there and encountered the same problem.
As recommended on most of these threads, I uninstalled the driver for my audio device, IDT High Definition Audio CODEC, and rebooted. Nothing.
I don't know what else to do. It used to work great and now it doesn't. I have scoured various Windows and HP forums who all recommend the same thing or refer me to the same Microsoft "help" sites that recommend the same thing. What am I doing wrong? What else can I do than what I have done?
Try uninstalling the Sound, in the Device Manager (do not uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes any Windows corruptions and many flakey problems. May take care of your problem.
In the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the IDT High Def Device to highlight it and the LEFT click "Uninstall". Restart the PC.
Just reinstalling the drivers over top of the existing drivers is hit or miss on whether it will fix problems.
Should I check off the box for "delete the driver software for this device"?
Thanks. No change. WAS still won't start.
Do you still have the IDT drivers installed? If you do, do the uninstall as I listed but also uninstall the drivers. Then restart and Windows will install the Microsoft HD Audio Codec drivers (generic basic function). See if that gets it started. If it does you can then consider reinstalling the HP supplied IDT drivers.
Yes, I have the IDT driver installed. So you are saying that I should repeat the first procedure but check the box to DELETE the driver software this time?
Yes. Uninstall the IDT and the drivers. Then when you restart, Windows will install the generic HD Audio Codec. That MAY get the service started. Worth a try.
Didn't work. It reinstalled the IDT driver and I am back where I started. I'll check that link. Thanks.
If you are still having IDT Audio issues with Windows 8/8.1 try the following.
No sound: Error: 1068-dependency service failed to start - Microsoft Community
Going into the services and manually turning off those 3 services, then turning them back on...That worked for me after upgrading to Windows 8.1 and losing sound. I now have sound thanks to that. Multimedia Class Scheduler is disabled on some machines by default after upgrading to 8.1, turning it on should resolve the IDT Audio problem.
