Duplicate sound device entries in volume mixer

Hey guys basically i have an ASus ux301la (zenbook infinity) and i noticed that after installing Displaylinks software (port replicator software) my default sound device was called (USB AUDIO) and that my Realtek sound device kind of went missing (no sound devices on the playback tab in the sound settings). I had no backups at teh time as its a new laptop and i really dont want to re-install 8.1 from scratch as it took me over a day to configure this thing to my personal config.

so i uninstalled the diplaylink software and uninstalled/reinstalled the sound drivers from the asus site and each time i did so it would create a new sound entry, hence all teh duplicates. Now i still have a problem because although sound works, i have to manually select the correct playback device in VLC player and i cannot see any sound devices in the playback tab on SOUND settings. Any advice welcome

Go to the Device Manager. There are probably multiple entries there too. If there are, uninstall them all (but do not uninstall the drivers). To Uninstall, RIGHT click on an entry to highlight it and then LEFT click "uninstall". Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect the sound and reinstall it. That should get you back to just one,

i wish that were teh answer. tried that a few times and thats why i have so many duplicate entries lol.

i noticed some strange behaviour though. when i uninstall the drivers via device manager the speaker device would appear in the playback tab on the sound properties. then after i closed the sound properties and re-opened them, the list would be empty again.

When you uninstalled in the Device Manager did you restart the PC? If you uninstall and then restart the PC, Windows should detect and install it as a new device. All the older entries for the device should have been removed.

If nothing is shown in the Control Panel/Sound Panel, RIGHT click in a blank area in that panel and then click to show Disabled and Disconnected devices. See what now shows up.

Thanks for your reply.

I did restart the pc each time and the entries were not removed.

as for hidden/disabled devices. None appear.

Weird behaviour is after installing/uninstalling the drivers, a device appears in the "sound" properties but then dissapears after reboot. Sound still works even though there is no device.
