Voice not loud with headphones - background music too loud

Hi there,
When I use headphones with my Surface Pro (Win 8) I cant hear the voices in my videos - the background music/sound effects are just too loud.

How can I fix this? I have tried using the Win 8 Video player as well as VLC Player and I still get the same issue.

I have tried the headphones on my iPhone and have no problems.

It has been a long time since i've used a Windows computer (usually have a Mac) so sorry if this is a silly question.

Thanks in advance
Nathan

You cou;d try using Winamp as it has an equalizer. Most DVDs the sound track and effects are pumped up compared to dialog. It drives me crazy, but short of demuxing, fixing the audio yourself then remuxing, trying to boost the voice frequencies is about all you can do.

That has to do with the surround sound effects of the video that you were watching try to find a stereo mix not surroundsound mix.

If you don't have a 5.1 surround sound system or if it is not configured properly you going to get that but there should be settings on any receiver to down downmix to the surround signal to stereo.

Watching it through Winamp might help if you had the appropriate plug-in for handling 3F2R/LFE audio

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Thanks for all your help.
Tried downloading Winamp but its not playing the video - just the audio.
This is all starting to sound too hard - might just stick to watching videos on my desktop.

Is there anyway to overall step audio down from 5.1 to 2 channel system wide?

Thanks

Just for grins give SPlayer Portable a try. Don't use the installer as that had some issues. I never had any quirks using the portable release. I suggest it because this little player performed better on less than stellar video hardware than many other better known players. And it's portable. Just delete the folder if you have no use for it.

Then it may be particular to your machine. I just got my first Laptop a couple months ago. I've always used desktops until then. So I have no experience with Surface Pro. All I can suggest at this point would be to try different audio drivers.

I had the reverse problem. Windows phone headset worked great but iPhone headset the background noise was really loud and voices very soft. I just had to plug to ear phones firmer in to the device, problem fixed.

Ensure you've plugged whatever earphones you are using in as far as they will go.
