Probably a driver, have you checked device manager to see if it is installed and working?

Please go to start > search > type device manager.
Check for any "unknown devices" (with yellow triangles on them)
Is you driver there, listed, and working?

If your driver is missing, or there is a yellow triangle on it, you will need to update it.

How To Find Drivers:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads

i used lot of driver programs like: Driver pack solution,
the problem is just in the first start, when restarting the sound works correctly
in the first start, when i click the sound icon, the sound device is not shown

ECS Web Site
my motherboard model is that one
i used compatibility mode to install the driver
but, like always, when shutting down and starting and going to device manager, i don't find the driver listed
and i just find: usb headset

and the sound doesn't work

I have a similar problem, which is that previously (Vista) the sound automatically configured itself to function from standard (and customising was EEEEEEEEEasy) and when one plugged into the headphone socket - headphones or ext. amp. - it defaulted to that output and muted the other one. Simple and logical! Now I have had to load - and fiddle - and fiddle some more...and then some more - to get the same result. BUT...in all honesty, I don't really know what I did to make it work properly, I just stopped fiddling when it did! This program is so annoying and frustrating - especially with WMP, which hasn't changed for the better either. More confusing and less straightforward and logical. Messed up my library too! How about the simple button or check box which says 'automatically set up sound' and another which makes the sound output to the socket chosen (or all of them at once...)!?

In most cases the best sound driver is the one supplied by the PC (or motherboard if a custom built) vendor. Non Vendor drivers, even ones from the sound chip vendor (e.g. RealTek), may not work or work properly. The generic Windows installed HD Audio Codec is only a basic function driver. Vista/Win 7 drivers should work OK as Win 8 uses the same sound scheme. Windows XP drivers will not work as some sound functions are handled differently in Vista/Win 7/Win 8.
