Solved no audio over hdmi without rebooting.

Hi, before I state my problem I just want to clarify that this didn't occur before updating to windows 8.1. Before the update my sound would switch between the tv and the laptop speakers automatically when as I unplug and plug in my hdmi cable. Now, I put my laptop to sleep when not in use or when transporting for obvious reasons and I really don't want to have to reboot every time I connect my tv.

Now my problem is, every time I plug in my tv, I get the usual switch over but the audio never gets to the tv. It shows up as usual in the playback devices and is the default. I'm not sure if it's drivers and ASUS doesn't have any audio drivers up for windows 8.1. I have read that this is a common problem with everyone. I'm not sure what else to do other than go through a lengthy process to backup and factory install my laptop back to 8 or wait for updated drivers.

The laptop: ASUS K55A w/ 8gb ram and upgraded wireless card.

You may want to reinstall the ASUS Windows 8 drivers.

If you have Realtek audio sometimes you have to right click on the speaker tray icon, select playback device and manually select HDMI. At least it is what works for me on 8, don't know for sure about 8.1.

Never mind, I missed first read of your post you tried this already.

Me again. Acer has new drivers posted for 8.1 Realtek audio. Maybe they will work for you too since these audio chips are pretty generic.

I think I'd need the intel drivers for the hdmi port. My onboard audio is realtek. I will try reinstalled the realtek though. also, dat filesize! lol

it appears that reinstalling the realtek drivers fixed it, I have not had my problem come back. thanks man. kinda odd that drivers for the integrated audio fixed a problem with the hdmi audio that uses intel drivers.

ok, so I'm still having problems with my sound. problem now is, after I finish an episode on vlc, the sound cuts out and the only way to fix it is to either restart the audio service or reboot. now, idk what else to do about this and it's really getting annoying. to top it off, flash malfunctions and crashes and the only way to fix that is to kill the process or it'll just output to my laptop speakers and not the tv where it's supposed to be. I'm tempted to do a factory restore and forget win8.1 but I really don't want to.

UPDATE: I managed to fix it by downloading and installing the updated intel video drivers for win8.1. Found it here. https://communities.intel.com/thread/45727 I had to uninstall and delete the existing drivers first though. For future reference, it's for the 3rd and 4th generation Intel Core processors.
