New AMD Radeon HD 7970 card install, now no ASUS Xonar DS?

Just got my first AMD card in years (maybe around ~5 years), I installed the latest driver from AMD without issues (13.10) then I installed the driver for the ASUS Xonar DS, the driver installed fine, but the sound card is not being detected as the primary Sound Device for Windows, it appears with a yellow exclamation point when going into Device Manager, under "Device Status" it says:

"The device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (Code 12).

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices in the system"
Which I already did, I disabled the HDMI audio from my HD 7970, and nothing.

What can I do?, I'm running out of ideas.

This was after a clean install of Windows 8.1 btw.

    Thanks.

Did the Xonar sound card work OK before installing the new video card? Or did you install both at the same time?

If you installed both at the same time, physically remove the new video card and go back to whatever you had before and then try to install the Xonar sound card and see if it works OK. 8GB of RAM is plenty. I have one system, an i5 3550 CPU and it rarely gets over 4GB of RAM used.

I've also seen some comments about the 8.1 having some sound issues. I don't remember what they are but something else to consider.

That error code is related to the power of the PCI bus controller. Try moving the Xonar sound card to a different PCI slot...use a PCI not PCIe and try it in the last PCI slot on the mobo.

Also, disable your onboard sound the BIOS.

bassfisher, most new motherboards that have a PCI slot is only a "bridged" slot from the PCIe bus and not true PCI. I wonder how that affects it this particular problem?

It depends on what slot the OP is using.....the key word is "resource" ...meaning not enough power..

Code 12: This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use

Oh crap...I just noticed your using the latest BETA driver 13.10. The actual latest driver from AMD is 13.9 which was just released a few days ago.

Uninstall that BETA driver and install the correct driver....13.9

Not enough free resources means Windows cannot allocate the required IRQ, memory, IO, or DMA etc, to that device . Go into device manager and select View resources by type. The Sound card is looking for one of those and can't get it from the motherboard. Moving a card to different slot may fix it as some slots share resources like IRQ's etc.

EDIT: If the motherboard has ports that are not being used like Serial Ports, Parallel ports, or even an IDE interface that doesn't have anything connected to it, disable them to free up resources.

Wow lots of replies, thanks you guys.

Just to give you an update on my situation, I actually fixed it by going back to Windows 8, 8.1 was a definite no go for me, maybe the Xonar drivers aren't ready for 8.1 yet (since the 13.10 BETA driver includes support for 8.1), it's really weird since I was actually running the Xonar DS perfectly fine on the 8.1 Preview build, so maybe something significant changed in the RTM build?

As the "final" version of 8.1 has not been released to the general public, there can be bugs in beta/pre-release versions. I'd wait until the "final" version is released and then try it.

Yeah but the "final" version will be the same as the one I downloaded from my DreamSpark account.

Let's hope they release a General Availability Patch for 8.1 like they did with Windows 8.

Is there a way I could send this information directly to Microsoft? like an online bug report for Windows 8.1...
