Windows 8 Audio suddenly stopped working

I have a dual boot Win 7, Win 8 setup. Suddenly the audio has stopped working on Win 8. (Works fine on Win 7) I checked for driver updates, even "installed" an old driver which didn't actually install. The volume control shows its trying to work, puff of green comes and goes at the bottom of the slider.

If you have had this problem and solved it please let me know. Other suggestions welcome however I've tried "cleaning" for other concerns and that made a real mess of the setups for several programs. I suppose I could do a refresh but that's equivalent to a re-install... what a pain.

I guess I looked in the wrong place for answers and they moved my posting to this area. Unfortunately it appears others have the same problem with no solution. I did try updating the video driver along with all available Win 8 updates. Still no audio.

I have all my programs running well on the Win 7 partition so I'm thinking of doing a Refresh. If that "refreshes" back to the original installation I assume the many many updates will be required. Any idea how long that will take?

I have two dual boot systems. The sound works on both without problems. If the sound is not working or working properly on one and not the other, the problem is ONLY within that one and nothing to do with the other. In this case the Win 8 installation is the only problem.

The first thing I would do is uninstall the sound in the Device Manager (in Win 8) and then restart the PC. When Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems and any corruptions between the sound and Windows.

Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall".

Also, have the correct sound driver installed. Only use the Dell provided sound driver. If Dell only has Win 7 drivers that is OK, as Win 7 drivers work OK in Win 8 (that is what I'm using on all my Win 8 installations). The Dell sound driver is preferred, I used to do a lot of support on the Dell forums and we found that non-Dell drivers either did not work or did not work correctly on many systems.

Thank you for the very detailed response. Unfortunately I had already done almost everything you suggested. However, I had not rebooted after un-installing the driver. So I tried that but it didn't help. I did download the "latest" RealTek driver from Dell but it didn't install probably because it is 2011 and the one running is 2012.

As you have a 2012 version, that suggests its not an "official" Dell driver. Suggest you uninstall that driver, restart the PC and then install the 2011 Dell driver and see what happens. As I noted, there can be issues with non Dell Drivers.

Based on your previous message I tried that. Unfortunately when rebooting after the installation the same drivers were re-installed. Those drivers had been working well until 2 days ago and were most likely installed when I installed Win 8 last October. Although the date on the download list from Dell is 2011 it may be they are actually the 2012 drivers. The RealTek driver running nicely on Win 7 is dated 2009. Alternately the 2012 drivers are stored somewhere on the computer and when the computer boots it sees there are later drivers available.

The other problem I am having on Win 8 is sometimes files/programs are slow to load. I tried a bunch of cleaning and disk checking but all that did was mess up some settings on some programs. It really made a disaster of my Firefox hundreds of bookmarks. I've switched to Chrome.

I guess I'll try a Refresh on Win 8 and see what kind of a disaster that causes Meanwhile I'm back on Win 7 for my daily activities.

If you ran any type of "PC Repair", "Registry Repair", "Optimizer", etc it is a very good chance Windows is corrupted. Those types of programs can cause more problems than they claim to fix. Win 7 and Win 8 do not need these programs, and many computer techies consider them "snake oil".

Nope, none of those. CCclean (or something like that) was recommended on this forum. In any case that was several weeks ago so if it caused a problem that's when it should have appeared.

CClean normally does not cause any problems, however it does have a built in Registry cleaner. The issue is with Win 7 and Win 8 registry cleaners as they do not have all the info that is needed and can uninstall something that is needed later on.

Whether that actually caused the problem ?? but as noted it could have uninstalled something that was not needed at the time but when something loaded that needed it, it was gone.
