First, use the Dell provided driver, non Dell drivers usually do not work or work correctly.

Uninstall the sound in the Device Manager, then restart the PC. When Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems and may fix yours.

On the Desktop, hold the Windows key down and press the Pause/Break key. Device Manager will be accessible from the Task list in the upper left of the panel. RIGHT click on the entry for your sound device and then LEFT click "Uninstall". Restart the PC.

i think i remeber why the sound stopped working, there was a time when my computer was blue screening left and right, usually whjen more then a few video tabs where open, i thought it was a problem with my drivers so i installed one of those driver updater programs, it updated most of my drivers pretty well but one fore my proccessor (i3) wasent abe to download so i think i downloaded something off intel, when i installed it my sound stopped working, also i used and installed th3e sound drivers specific tom my computer and also from the drivers disk that came with it.

**it turns out that the inside of my computer was comletely dusty! it was bad! i cleaned it out and it worked fine,

Those updaters can get you in trouble if you are not careful. They will want to install wrong or not needed drivers. On a Dell, best to stick with what updates they have on their site. www.support.dell.com using your service tag number. I did a lot of support on the Dell forums and non-Dell has caused a lot of problems in many systems. The Updaters are sort of like the programs that "fix" the computer (registry repair programs - those don't really fix anything and many consider them "snake oil".

Now, back to the sound, has it started working or is the sound still bad?

Nope, did what you said, (btw these headphones work on other devices) also went on dell.com and searched up my service tag and downloaded the sound drivers before but it dident work, i dont have alot of money so i really want to solve this problem without taking it to a pc store, is there a program that gets my computers diagnosis reports or something that i can give to you or someone else so they can see what the problem is?

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel, Playback section. Your "Speakers" should be set as the default playback device. If the digital or HDMI is set then you will see the sound playing but won't hear anything.

You mentioned the headphones. is it just the front panel headphone jack that is not working? Does the PC speakers work? Can you plug the headphones into the rear GREEN speaker jack and hear audio?

Here is a clip of what mine shows. I may have more than you have in the sound panel, but the key is the "Speakers" which is the internal sound device.

That just looks like one of the multitude of registry "repair" programs. I do not recommend ANY of these types of programs.

Did you connect the headphones to the GREEN speaker jack as I suggested? That will help in problem isolation. If it works there that says the sound is working OK and the problem is either in the front panel headphone jack, the cable, the connection to the motherboard or a problem in the sound chip. If the rear speaker jack does work, first thing is to power off the PC and open the case and check/reseat (unplug then plug back in) the HD Audio connector (for the front panel headphone/mic).

If its anything other than a reseat of the connector, contact Dell as only Dell can get it fixed under warranty (assuming its still in warranty).

#17 on the motherboard layout is the connection for the front panel headphone/mic jacks.

I like and use Driver sweeper now Driver Fusion and fully recommend i. You can read more about it here ar Guru3D....What I think is happening here is, some left overs of previous drivers and unwanted and wrong drivers are causing the problem.

    Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

The actual site for Driver Fusion is here... We are happy to see you at Treexy.com

If all else fails...you could do a system restore to a point in time before the issue started and that doesn't work, a factory format install using the hidden partition and Dells software to make it like the day you first started it up.
