I have spent hours installing and uninstalling drivers from the Toshiba and Intel sites. Tech support said to return it but I have just spent 2 days installing software. I never took a break to watch Netflix. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

The video is apparently not detecting the HDMI cable. Assuming you have a good HDMI cable it suggests a hardware problem in the new PC.

Thanks for your response. I would agree where the problem not widespread. I find it hard to believe that there are so many malfunctioning pc's. I'm going to give it a few more days and then return it.

Is there a good way to save all of the work I've done?

As fast as PC's are produced, anymore, I'm surprised there isn't more "bad" ones. They don't do the "burn in" like they used to do and that results in less quality control.

Reinstalling the Video drivers, from the PC vendor, is about the only other thing you can try.

Reinstalling the Video drivers, from the PC vendor, is about the only other thing you can try. The "High Definition Audio Device" for the HDMI suggests the proper driver is not installed and only the generic Windows installed (basic function) driver has been installed.

I've gone to the Toshiba site and downloaded numerous drivers and when I get to the install point they all say that my computer does not meet minimum requirements - see the attached screen shots.

Capture1.PNGCapture2.PNG

I find this pretty amazing as the process begins with my entering my pc's serial # - you would expect the correct drivers to be listed. Really bad website design, really bad support. The phone support is non-existent - they want to charge me!

I had a Toshiba 10 years ago that was a dream - then a nightmare Dell - now I have a problematic Toshiba.

I will keep trying earlier drivers. I've already tried the ones from the Intel site - they either don't fix the problem or don't install.

Any further thoughts? Please! Thanks again for your help.

All HDMI cables are not created equal. I bought a cheapie trying to save a few bucks and I had sound and resolution problems. I kept getting "unknown timing" errors until I bought a good quality cable. The cable I had was fine on my full sized laptop but gave me problems with a netbook. A new cable solved the problem.

You said you had video but no sound. When you look at your sound playback do you have the device listed there? My TV shows up as TOSHIBA-TV. I had to set the device as the default sound to get it to work. (See Sound picture)

Also you can try changing your screen resolution to see if you get sound using a different screen resolution. I don't know why it would have any effect on the sound but based on my troubleshooting I was able to get sound at some lower resolution with my netbook that was having the problems. (See resolution Picture)

These screenshots are from my Win7 desktop. The Netbook I was having problems is Win8 Pro.

Sorry I did not see the last two replies until just now.

fireberd -I did go to Intel and load the most recent driver - I believe it ended in 3097. When I did that my system did not even display Digital Audio - just the Realtek speakers. So I began installing earlier versions - 3040, 2843, 2828 until I got it back. Some where on the Intel site it is recommended that the brand-specific drivers be used as they might be tweaked by the manufacturer. So now I have version 2828 from the Toshiba site installed.

Thanks again for you help.

Hi mick823 - sorry I did not see this earlier but I had to get a new phone and then spend hours adding software to that.

Just now I tried lowering the resolution on my connected TV but it did not work. I don't see my TV listed under playback devices - just the laptop's internal speakers and Digital Audio (HDMI). Did you get that driver from the Toshiba site? I just want the laptop to output sound to any HDTV - not just mine.

Thanks for your help.

Problem Resolved With Workaround

Okay -

I bought a 1/8" 3.5mm to rca cable - did not work. And yes - there is sound using headphones. Last try - a simple 3.5mm connected to TV using PC AUDIO IN socket and it worked.

I still think this is driver problem as I was able to get by with just the HDMI cable on my crap Dell that now gets so hot it shuts down in 10 minutes - but that's tomorrow's dilemma.

Now I can watch True Blood on HBO GO.

Thank you all - this is a great forum - so many helpful people.

My WIN8 netbook is a Gateway and the WIN7 desktop is a Dell. As soon as I plug the HDMI cable from the TV into either of them my computer screen turns black for just an instant as it recognizes the hookup. At that point I have dual screen set-up and the HDMI sound is recognized as TOSHIBA-TV. It still won't output sound to the TV unless I set it as the default sound. Not really a problem because as soon as I disconnect the HDMI cable it reverts back to the computer speakers. If you are still not seeing the TV on the sound devices my gut feeling is that it is a cable issue and not your driver at all.

Hi again -

I don't have that option - I just see Digital Audio unplugged (HDMI). This option is disabled - I can not set it to be my default. This option is there regardless of whether I'm connected to the TV via HDMI. Nothing changes when I plug the TV in other than both screens going black and my external monitor being extended onto the HDTV.

It all worked just fine with my crappy Dell but very differently. On the Dell I only see speakers until I plug the HDMI cable in - then two identical entries for AMD HDMI Output show up and one is set as the default.

The Dell has Win 8 Pro on it. I'm going to update the Toshiba to pro - perhaps that will help. I can live with the two cables. I'm going to pick up a better hdmi cable as well.

Thanks again for your help.

There are cheapo cables and then there are HDMI certified cables. I think I ended up buying a Monster or Belkin Cable. About $20 for a 6 footer. Post back your findings if you get it resolved. Good Luck!

Those Intel cards with HDMI output are tricky - I was running Windows 7 on a gateway, it has the Intel HDMI. No SOund from HDMI, until I downloaded the Windows Vista driver for the HDMI, I forced it in and it worked. You can't install from the package, because it says not the right OS. you have to extract the package CAB file and install them manually. When I did that, Boom, HDMI sound. There were no 7 drivers for that laptop, it was an old 17" Original Core Duo laptop.

HDMI Audio Problem Resolved

I've seen several of these posts about HDMI audio not passing to an external monitor (e.g. TV). I had this problem and found the solution, so I thought I'd pass it on. My PC is an Asus notebook running Win 8.1 with an Intel Iris 5100 Graphics adapter and Realtek HD Audio. While what I found may not apply to your system, I'm guessing it does to many.

The problem was recognizing that for HDMI output with audio, there are three (3) drivers involved:

1. The Display driver (e.g. Intel Iris Graphics 5100)
2. The Audio driver (e.g. Realtek HD Audio)
3. The Display Audio driver ("Display Audio" part of the Display driver)

After installing the latest drivers for 1 & 2, I then:

- Rebooted the PC
- Plugged in the HDMI cable to my TV
- Switched the PC display to Duplicate on the external monitor (TV)

At that point my Device Manager looked like this:

DeviceMgrBefore.jpg

and my "Playback devices" in Sound looked like this:

PlaybackBefore.jpg

I then installed a new driver for the "Display Audio" device. The new driver was part of my (Intel Iris 5100) Display driver files and located in a folder called "DisplayAudio". There was no Setup.exe for this driver, so it had to be installed manually - in other words, right-clicking on the Display Audio device in Device Manager and selecting "Update Driver software" then "Browse my computer for driver software".

After installing this driver, I did the reboot, plug-in in HDMI cable and set Duplicate display again (you have to do all three steps after each new driver install).

At that point my Device Manager looked like this:

DeviceMgrAfter.jpg

and my "Playback devices" in Sound looked like this:

PlaybackAfter.jpg

HDMI with audio is now working properly for me.

If you find a similar situation on your system, this should work. Good luck.
