Speakers are muted when microphone is plugged in

Hi!

I have a windows eight computer, and when I plug in my microphone (on my headset) my speakers are muted. I assume there is a simple sound option somewhere that does this, but I have been unable to find anything by looking around or searching google. The headset does not mute speakers on other computers when the microphones are plugged in, nor does it differ with other headsets.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Usually, PC sound systems are set up that they default to muting the speakers when a headset is plugged in, but not a microphone. The fact it does not mute when a microphone is plugged in and the feedback is a common complaint.

Your sound card's Audio Manager (if you have one) would be the place to check for that option. e.g. I have RealTek audio and the RealTek HD Audio Manager that I have does not have an option for the microphone. It does have an option for the speakers to either mute or not mute when a headset is plugged in.

I wasn't able to find any such option in my audio manager (dell audio manager), so I downloaded a RealTek codec, got the RealTek HD Audio Manager and fixed it there as you described. Thank you!

Cool. Usually the PC vendor's drivers are the preferred, especially with a Dell. But, if it works, great.
