I have run a cross a highly annoying feature with the Windows 8 OS that did not exist in Vista... It is impossible to monitor a line in or Mic recording with out being subjected to a significant sound delay... Being a musician this makes my work impossible... Is the issue with the OS ??? How can I get rid of this with out replacing my sound card (Current (IDT) I believe the old one was a Realtek or going to a retro OS such as XP or Vista... Windows 8 is full of annoying redundant features but this is by far has been the hardest to try and resolve....

Perhaps I should be more specific… The signal source ( i.e.line in- mic etc…) is being recorded in real time but it is impossible to hear live as it is being recorded, there are two options as far as I can tell… clickon the” listen tab” and get the annoying sound delay or click off the tab andhear nothing at all live from the recording source… Is there a fix ??? Can Iupdate the IDT drivers??? Do I dump windows 8 and go retro??? Do I invest in anew sound card ??? Wish I would havenever purchased this OS… Can’t click and rearrange files within a folder haveto rename them… Start screen and all consuming media library is a big pain inthe rear… etc…etc…lol…

Check your speaker properties and make sure that in your playback and your recording devices settings that audio enhancements are disabled, they may be causing the delay..

You can also select listen to this device (for realtime monitoring of your input)

There are no audio enhancements under speaker properties and play back or recording devices to disable... I've done some investigating and found that this is was also a major problem with Windows 7... Vista was the last Microsoft OS that was free of this problem... I have come up with a temporary solution by putting a splitter on the line from the recording source to the line in on the PC and attaching a set of headphones, this enables me to hear what I am recording in real time but then in order to hear both playback and recording source during multi-tracking I have to remove the phones from one ear to hear... I'm looking for a permanent fix...

Clicking the listen to this device tab is the only way to hear sounds while they are being being recorded, but there is a significant delay... click that tab off and you hear nothing from the recording source at all... I believe I explained that in my first post...

I too have same problem but with a TV card, it lags by about 1 second when viewing live. Lowering sound quality did help a bit but I guess it is not an option for you, give it a try just to see if that helps. When watching movies or listening, it is right on.
PS. Just tried something and looks like it worked. Turned on Speaker Fill in the Speaker properties panel.

Unfortunately lowering sound quality is not an option for meand I have no “speaker fill” option in my speaker properties… After a greatdeal of investigation and a mind numbing 2 hr exchange with a Microsoft tech(who in the end finally admitted he had no idea what I was talking about) Ihave found a solution for those using Realtek sound cards… There is a Realtekdriver update that fixes the latency bug in Windows 7 & 8… For those of usthat have an IDT sound card a fix for this problem is impossible, the problemhas to do with the way the Windows 7 & 8 OS processes analog sound into adigital signal… There was a petition from musicians to Microsoft that I ranacross that dates to the onset of Windows 7 asking them to find a fix or losethe said musicians to a Macintosh OS… Microsoft never responded with a patch or driver update and let the problem continue into Windows 8… I cannotafford a new Mac system so my planned fix is to go retro to XP on a laptop forany live recording…

I gave up on Realtek drivers and am using MS drivers now. Before I used R271 drivers but things got even worse.
Looks like you should maybe go back to Atari ST if they can't fix the problem. Why don't you give standard Win drivers a shot, maybe lack of Speaker Fill option could be attributed to that. Looks like that fixed my problem but now I can't use noise and echo canceling, although it works in Skype, always something.
Long time ago I used Atari ST for music editing and there's a nice studio around here that uses bunch of STs.
