Sound Applet Won't Open

Hi,

The Playback Devices applet will not open.

I have...

1. Run the CP in God Mode to try related applets. Volume Control Options and Volume Mixer will open.
2. Removed and refreshed all audio devices listed in the Device Manager. No errors.
3. Run control /name Microsoft.Sound and control mmsys.cpl from an elevated Command Prompt. The Command Prompt window blinks briefly, but the applets will not open.
4. System File Check sfc /scannow (no errors detected)

Any suggestions?

Running Windows 8 Pro with Media addon. Using the onboard sound from the Gigabyte motherboard. The sound plays fine on the current speakers, but I cannot change devices.

I'm using a late model gigabyte motherboard (GA Z77X UD5H) with and i7 3770 CPU and RealTek audio.

Exactly what do you want to change? The Sound panel is where you select the default audio playback device (you can only have one default playback device at one time). The Recording section is where you set or select the recording device, which should be Stereo Mix so that any device (e.g. mic or line in) will record or if you want to record streaming audio from the Internet.

I use three audio devices - headphones, stereo speakers, and HDMI audio to my television. All I need to do is change the default playback device a couple of times a day.

This has suddenly become an issue, with the applet often not opening for me. It works sometimes, after I reboot the computer.

I'm not "selling" anything. I mentioned Start8 and a link. There are other posts, by others not me, about start8 on the forum and on other forums. It was just a recommendation.

I will refrain from posting on anything you post from now on.
