Solved Can't play mp4 files on iTunes

Hi guys, I just purchased a new laptop 3 days ago with windows 8 and I am trying to export my movies onto itunes but they won't import. Previously on my older laptop I was running windows vista and the movie files played on itunes. They were mp4 files. I went onto the set defaults for programs and tried un-checking the mp4 box on the program "Video" which I think may be the reason I can't export them onto itunes but the box won't un-check. Any solution?

This not a "sound or audio" problem (this forum section). Not sure which section it belongs in, though.

But, I don't like the "new" version of iTunes. Can't seem to get around it like the old versions (I have an iPhone5).

Hi DStyles and welcome to Eightforums!

It looks like the main reason you can't play the MP4 files is because you are lacking the proper codecs.

Try installing the K-Lite Codecpack. The standard pack contains everything you need to play all sorts of video and audio files.

You can download it here ==> Download K-Lite Codec Pack

Goodluck with it!

Doing a google search for iTunes/Mp4 it appears that it is not a native format that iTunes supports (at least in current versions).

Here is one thread I found on the subject: How to play MP4 files - AfterDawn: Guides

Thank you guys for helping out but both methods provided work for WMP and I want it to work for iTunes as I use iTunes for all my music and movies and I have and ipod as well an ipad. On my previous laptop, itunes opened up the mp4 files. I went to "control panel" to change the program which mp4 files open to itunes but for some reason it does not change. I has it on "Video" which is the xbox video thing. :(

The current versions, as I noted, of iTunes from google search says it is not hatively supported. The old version you had either supported it or you had a 3rd party codec installed that did support it.

There are suggestions for supporting it but most that I found are through a purchased 3rd party program.

Do a google search for this as there are many "hits".

The other option is to convert it to a file type that iTunes now supports.

Ok well thank you fireberd. I think that may be the problem. On my previous laptop I had iTunes 11.0 but never updated. If not that then I may had had a 3rd party codec. Thank you nonetheless guys.

Hi there
Just use VLC player from videolan.org - apart from video this FREE player plays almost every possible known Audio codec in the entire universe.

Enc screenshot of the link -- for some reason at the moment my direct links don't seem to be working so just copy it from the screen shot.

(Perhaps Goole's been hacked again !!).

Cheers
