Speakers not detected properly

I am using windows 8 pro x64 with an asus P8P67 LE motherboard and have a 5.1 sound system. I installed win 8 fresh and the audio was working fine. One time when I booted up, the audio sounded off. The sound was only coming out of the front left speaker. I did the speaker test within win 8 and the realtek menu. The front right speaker is being detected as the subwoofer and the rest are fine. It's the only speaker not working properly so it's like having two subs. I tried setting it to stereo, 2.1, speaker fill, ect... with the same results. I have not messed with wiring or software. Sometimes it would go back to normal but then do it again randomly. In the end, I reinstalled win 8 and it worked fine. Then suddenly, it happened again. The only difference this time is that it will not go back to normal by itself. It seems to be stuck on this "setting". I did do some research but I guess I didn't do it well enough because I could not find an answer that would work. Again, it worked fine in win 7 and sometimes in win8. I have checked the wires to make sure nothing has changed and that they are connected well and they are fine. I tried changing the speaker settings and speaker fill but with no results. I don't know what else to try.

Are you using the ASUS supplied sound driver? if not, give that a shot as it has jack detection and many other features. Non-Vendor drivers may or may not work or work correctly. If you just have the default basic function Windows installed "HD Audio Codec" that is a very good reason for the flakey operation.

Also reseat (unplug and plug back in) all the audio cables to the PC (make sure they are in the correct jacks) and also the cables in the speaker system.

I did try those drivers and never used the ones supplied by windows. I used the one from the realtek website and then tried the ones from the ASUS website. I still gave them a second try but still no results. I also checked and reseated all the wiring.

Check all the cabling internal to the speaker system. The 3 audio cables from the PC go to the bass speaker cabinet (where the power amplifiers are) and then distributed from there. Could very well be something in the speaker system and not a PC/Win 8 problem.
