I think the iPhone4 headphone/mic is different from the newer model that comes with an iPhone5.

According to the description on the Apple site it has a four conductor 3.5mm plug. It doesn't say what is on different sections of the plug. It may not be compatible and it working was a fluke.

Regular "PC" microphones are "condenser" types that have the audio signal on the tip and the "ring" provides the 5 VDC that is needed by the condenser mic to work. I don't think that is the case with iPhone mic's.

I don't know about the line in. Some Laptops have a combo mic/line in jack and it auto senses which is plugged in. I don't know what your Laptop has or what has been provided in the PC vendor's RealTek sound driver. The RealTek drivers are customized by the PC vendor for their specific application.

Update. I found this about using them with a Macbook. It should be basically the same way with a PC.
