Sound Plays Through Speakers When Headphones Plugged In

The title pretty much says it all. I realize there are other threads out there similar to this, but their solutions either didn't work for me, or the problem wasn't quite the same. My issue is as follows: When I plug my headphones into my laptop (hp dv7t 6c000 quad) audio plays through both the speaker and the headphones, which I don't want. Also, when I check the volume, there are 2 sliders, one for the speakers and one for the headphones. When I check the mixers, almost all programs are under the normal speaker mixer (and they play through the normal speakers), but some (steam being one of them) show up under the headphones mixer. When I move the slider to a new sound volume for the headphones, it makes the little ding sound (through the headphones) and I can hear the test. Disabling my default speakers didn't work, and neither did setting the headphones as default. I uninstalled and reinstalled my drivers. I'm totally at a loss of what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some systems have an Audio Control Panel that allows the option of having the speakers on when you plug in headphones, or to not have speakers on. Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound to see if you have this and the option.

For example, I have RealTek audio and in my Realtek HD Audio Manager, I have the option for how I want the headphone jack to operate.

You say you uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers, but did you use the HP supplied driver? If not, the HP supplied sound driver is the preferred driver. Non-Vendor drivers in many cases may not work or work correctly.

I did install the hp drivers. However, the problem appears to have fixed itself. I can't really figure out what I did, but my headphones just started working normally again. If the problem comes back, I'll try your solution. Thanks!

If you didn't restart the PC after reinstalling the drivers that could have been a cause. After reinstalling drivers, its best to restart the PC so the new driver is the only one that is running.

I restarted. I'm fairly competent with drivers, as I spent weeks trying to get my gpu drivers working. What perplexes me is the only thing I did that may have fixed the problem was I noticed that the system sounds were muted in the volume mixer for my regular speakers so I turned them up. The next time I tried my headphones, they worked. It's probably just a coincidence, but still. Pretty weird.

Problem fixed.

Its pretty easy. I had the same thing as you but if you go to sound on the bottom right of your screen and press it, you see the speaker icon. You press it and speaker properties pops up. You then go to levels and lower the balance to 0.
