Try re-installing/searching for a newer driver. Besides using Device Manager to search, you could go to you OEM's site to see what's available driver-wise for your machine there. Turn your sound up?

Update firmware for sound card? You really haven't given us much to go on, including, originally, knowledge of what you had already tried.

right click your sound icon...click playback devices...then select your default device...eg external speakers and set as default.

Note: just my opinion, but I found that once 8 is installed and sound drivers are installed...8 natively seems to select the digital audio device as default.
