I've recently upgraded to windows 8, the problem I have is that today (everything was fine before) WMP decided to stop playing file, when I go to audio properties or try playing sound/music via other program e.g. Firefox...
It's really annoying, please help, here's a screenshot:
(Before this happened, I was able to go to speakers' properties and apply different enhancements, the WMP would not even pause the playback, now it comes up with an error)

Try a System Restore and restore the PC back to a date PRIOR to this happening. If that does not fix it, System Restore has an undo function.

Thanks for your quick reply, I've got few questions before I do that:
Will it get rid of my apps/programs/settings/personalisation?
Will it slow down my computer(happened to me before when I did it on vista)?
Is it possible to mess something up by doing system restore?
Where can I find it on windows 8? I can't find it by searching start menu

*I think all this might have happened because I've installed an windows 7 sound (input&output) driver using compatibility mode, but that's the only way I could get my microphone to work

Go to the desktop and then hold the Windows key down and press the Pause/Break key. You will get the system control panel. Enter system restore in the search and it will find it for you.

System Restore will change anything that was done AFTER the restore point. But if it was done, such as customization, before the restore point it won't change that. Any programs or program updates installed or uninstalled after the restore point will have to be installed or uninstalled again. It will not slow down the computer. It will not delete any user data or e-mails.

Like I said, if you run the System Restore and it doesn't fix the problem, System Restore has an undo option that will undo the System Restore and put it back the way it was before you ran System Restore.

I do part-time PC support and System Restore is my "friend" and it makes me look like "super tech" fixing many problems. It won't fix everything but it is a very useful tool.

That's a lot of useful information you've just given me here, thank you :)
But still, there's a problem, I can't restore my system - system restore was disabled, and it didn't create ANY restore points:

Also, I tried uninstalling the "Conexant HD Audio" driver, but when I click the "Uninstall/Change" button, nothing happens.

Is there any way to get rid of/overwrite the existing driver with the default one I had after installing windows? I'd rather have no microphone than a lot of annoying errors..

Go to the HP(Compaq) site and download the HP provided sound driver (The Vista/Win 7 version will work if there is no Win 8 listed). Install that (it will overwrite whatever sound driver you have installed now). Restart the PC after the sound driver install and then see if it works like it used to.

Did you enable System Restore? If not, do that as its a critical (needed) feature.

I already had the newest Windows 7 driver for Conexant HD Audio, there are no newer ones available (and there won't be unfortunately)
That's not a problem though, I've used Device Manager to roll back the driver... I have no mic, but I finally got rid of the errors :)
Thank you very much for your help, everything's solved now.
BTW, System restore is enabled now
