Solved Via HD Audio Deck

The first place to start is the PC Vendor (or if this is a custom build, the motherboard vendor) for drivers. Win 7 drivers, in most cases, work OK in Win 8.

If the PC or Motherboard Vendor, as applicable does not have a compatible driver, you can try the Via site.

Sorry firebird, I should have said. ASUS Rampage 111 gene mobo. I went onto the VIA The website and re: the cookies I went into Internet Options and turned the Privacy right down and still not able to see the downloads. ASUS is not much better for the audio chip update. It is the nag screen saying update. In devices, it says you have the latest driver.

There is no problem with audio.

Thanks for your help.

I just went on the VIA site and had no problem with accessing drivers. I don't have anything special setup in Internet Explorer. Just the default settings.

I had the same problem in IE 10, had to enable "compatibility view" to get that site to work correctly.

The VIA HD Audio Deck is the configuration utility. It lets you set number of speakers, change jack functions, setup an equalizer, etc.
Windows 8 didn't have driver for my onboard VIA sound. ASUS only had Windows 7 drivers, they worked in compatibility mode though. VIA had actual Windows 8 drivers so that's what I used.

Windows 7 has built-in drivers for codecs that follow the Intel HD Audio standard, including the Realtek and VIA ones on my motherboards. Surely Windows 8 continues to support this Intel standard?

The onus is on the manufacturers to supply drivers to Microsoft for any new OS. At the time I installed Windows 8, VIA didn't have any Windows 8 Drivers available for download, and Windows 8 didn't install any default drivers. I had no sound at all. My motherboard uses a Nvidia/nForce chipset and AMD processor. There is nothing Intel on it.

My other PC also has an ASUS motherboard, same chip-set as this one but has RealTek audio instead of VIA. Sound works fine with Windows 8's default drivers. M4N68 in this PC and an M2N68 in my other. I use Logitech keyboards mice and trackballs on all my PC's. No problems what so ever with any of them. The Logitech Setpoint software is another matter though.

Well, that's interesting. I would hope for motherboards using Intel chipsets at least, Windows 8 is like Windows 7 and doesn't require a third party driver for audio, nor will it particularly benefit from one, and I would avoid installing one unless I needed something specific that only it can provide. (I had a bad experience with a VIA driver about 3 years ago, and 3rd party drivers bring nothing to the table for me as I just run optical to my AVR.)

Um, I'm not trying to stir anything up, but if the audio chip-set is Realtek or VIA what does that have to do with the motherboard being Intel or AMD. They are both going to use the same driver? If there is no driver there is no driver? VIA have one out now so at some point you may get it over windows update and not have to go to VIA and hunt it up.
