Just curious, but what exactly does VIA Audio Deck bring to the table?

    VIA Audio Deck

When I installed Windows 8, got dialog box saying I needed to update my audio (ASUS Rampage gene 111 mobo). Now I don't get the dialog, and no change in audio! The driver is 10,xxx (I renamed it to VIA Audio).

The VIA HD Audio Deck is the configuration utility. It lets you set number of speakers, change jack functions, setup an equalizer, etc.
Windows 8 didn't have driver for my onboard VIA sound. ASUS only had Windows 7 drivers, they worked in compatibility mode though. VIA had actual Windows 8 drivers so that's what I used.

Windows 7 has built-in drivers for codecs that follow the Intel HD Audio standard, including the Realtek and VIA ones on my motherboards. Surely Windows 8 continues to support this Intel standard?

The onus is on the manufacturers to supply drivers to Microsoft for any new OS. At the time I installed Windows 8, VIA didn't have any Windows 8 Drivers available for download, and Windows 8 didn't install any default drivers. I had no sound at all. My motherboard uses a Nvidia/nForce chipset and AMD processor. There is nothing Intel on it.

    VIA Audio Deck

My HP Laptop has an AMD processor. No audio problems. The most trouble I have had is with the Logitech mice (desktop and Laptop).
I worry what will the problems be with Windows 9...if and when it appears.

My other PC also has an ASUS motherboard, same chip-set as this one but has RealTek audio instead of VIA. Sound works fine with Windows 8's default drivers. M4N68 in this PC and an M2N68 in my other. I use Logitech keyboards mice and trackballs on all my PC's. No problems what so ever with any of them. The Logitech Setpoint software is another matter though.

Well, that's interesting. I would hope for motherboards using Intel chipsets at least, Windows 8 is like Windows 7 and doesn't require a third party driver for audio, nor will it particularly benefit from one, and I would avoid installing one unless I needed something specific that only it can provide. (I had a bad experience with a VIA driver about 3 years ago, and 3rd party drivers bring nothing to the table for me as I just run optical to my AVR.)

Um, I'm not trying to stir anything up, but if the audio chip-set is Realtek or VIA what does that have to do with the motherboard being Intel or AMD. They are both going to use the same driver? If there is no driver there is no driver? VIA have one out now so at some point you may get it over windows update and not have to go to VIA and hunt it up.

I hope you are right. Being Christmas there maybe some goodwill from the software providers. We can just have faith! I am not sure what chip in the Rampage mother board needs the VIA driver, but so far so good.
