    No sound?

    -I freshly installed windows 8
-successfully installed my audio drivers, restarted computer
-my sound card is a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio...status: device is working properly
-determined that device driver is up to date

    Refresh the PC.
If that does not work then remove driver. Then remove the sound card (after shutting down pc).
Then reinsert it & install the driver.

not sure how removing the card will do anything as it was working just fine on a different OS, but I'll try it anyway.

also, is 'refreshing' the PC different than restarting it?

If the drivers don't work, try older drivers, they might work. However, check whether these are any good for you:
Creative Worldwide Support > Sound Blaster X-Fi HD

EDIT: Yes, Refresh is different from restarting. You could also try switching off the computer, disconnect all cables, press Power button, let the PC idle for a while, reconnect the mains and boot.
For refresh, follow this Tutorial:Refresh Windows 8

Was I supposed to have the drivers installed before Refreshing the PC? I refreshed the PC, and it still doesn't work.

Also, I tried putting my sound card in a different PCIE port and no luck.

I don't know if Creative's beta drivers would be helpful. They're available from www.creative.com. (I tried pasting a link, but it didn't work.)

I suspected that my X-Fi was causing trouble under Win8 RP, so I've been with the Realtek onboard sound ever since. Sound isn't as good, but problems have been nonexistent.
