my phone is unlocked and connected to my computer. I open the MS Photo App and click on import. I then select my source device to import from and i get the following message: 'there are no files or folder in this view'. I don't get it.

Which phone do you have? Android or iPhone? Which version of the OS?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 (Android) and couldn't get it to work to transfer pictures and such with my desktop PC running Win 10. I typically just put my pics into DropBox and then they are automatically downloaded to my PC.

Another tool I've used to transfer files over the network is ES File Explorer.

I've never owned an iPhone but if that's what you have, I believe you need to use iTunes to transfer files to/from PC.
