In reading the first chapter of "Metro Revealed: Building Windows 8 apps with HTML5 and JavaScript" the development described requires the use of Visual Studio. It sounds like this expensive Microsoft product will be required to develop apps for Windows 8. (Yes, there is a free trial version for now.) Is Visual Studio actually a requirement or will it be possible to easily develop Metro apps in other environments?

- I worked my up from a virtual machine, to a slow 32-bit celeron and now two monitors on my XPS8100. Works great!
