Solved Just started to use Macrium Reflect v6 Free

After many years of using Acronis True Image I'm ditching it as I'm fed up with the scheduler2 problem. I use Win 8.1 Home so I don't have GPEDIT so cannot apply the patch given elsewhere.

Anyway, I just managed to restore an image of my C:\ system drive, but what I don't like is the way Macrium uses the image ID to identify each image so I can identify each partition and image, rather than a long alpha-numeric id. I'm used to being able to name the images how I want them. Is it possible to do this with Reflect?

I confess I felt a bit 'wound up' when I told it to start the recovery as I have had a recovery failure before (with Acronis) and it took a long time to get my system back! At my age I don't need that to happen again.:(

I also tried Ocster, Aomei Backupper and Easeus Todo and they all gave me the heebie jeebies trying to work out how to do the recovery of an image. I tried Paragon a while ago and that also seemed difficult (for me). It would be nice if I can use my own naming system with Reflect, All these programs seemed to be overly technical in their interface while I always found Acronis easy to understand.

Yes, of course you can name them yourself. Remove the checkmark from the box titled "Use the image ID as the file name (Recommended)" and you can then type a name in the "Backup filename" field below it.

Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
Ah, how did I miss that? Just tired I guess!

If I then use my own image ID, starting with Full, then Differential, presumably that ID will continue to be used for all subsequent images??

Thank you strollin and and Cliff S

I don' use differential -- too much trouble. Hard drives are cheap enough that storing several full images doesn't use up much of the drive.

Also, my experience is that if you want your own image ID, you have to enter it each time. I've not seen it remember the Image ID I use.

That's good too Mark... I have recently learned if only one differntial gets corrupted, everything is lost, But if one full is corrupted, then you can just use an earlier one.

Cliff

does that mean a differential backup made using the Reflect Image D could fail or did you mean if I used my own User ID? I'm using the free version. In any case I would only use one full and two incrementals at a time as I don't like long versions anyway.

Thanks Mark, noted!

I'm talking about differential backups. See this post from essenbe and the few following in Windows 10 forums he explained it to me.

You might be interested in the incremental backup option? Quote from Macrium....

When Reflect creates an incremental image it only backs up the parts of your disk that contain data that is different from the last backup you made. The advantage of this is that the resultant image file is both much smaller and much quicker to create than a full image. The only slight disadvantage is that when you restore your data, Reflect needs to access all the image files in the backup set to reconstruct the disk you want to restore. However, if the image files are stored in a local or network directory then this operation is automatic and completely transparent.

You may be wondering what the other backup type ‘differential’ is. A differential backup is similar to an incremental backup. However, rather than backing up the changes since the most recent backup, a differential backup will save changes made since the first/full backup.

Thanks for the link Cliff S, much as I expected but it is good to cover it again.

Steve C, thank you for that also, i have usually used incremental but in future I may well use differential instead. I plan to do one full then a diff and than a full. I have a 500gb esata disc so I should have room for several backups, then a clearout when the space is getting low.

I must have tried about 8 different imaging programs but I still feel unsure about the restore image function on all of them. Several of them made a pigs ear of my discs and partitions so I really couldn't tell which was which ( this after booting from the Linux or GRUB CDs), and I could barely read the text on them without getting up close to the screen! Naturally I backed out!

So I've been playing with True Image again and it is the only one I feel comfortable with so I will probably stick with it, having had it for at least ten years, maybe upgrade from v14 to v16 or just use the trial v16. But I do aim to keep Reflect as belt and braces, I have another 300gb sata disc and I plan to do an image with Reflect once a week and hopefully get more familiar with it. And if it fouls up due to me doing the wrong thing I can still get back with Acronis, hopefully.

Thanks for the input from all, it is appreciated!

The version of Acronis True Image I used installed low level disk drivers which were a real pain to remove - see http://www.eightforums.com/drivers-hardware/62551-safe-removal-acronis-true-image-drivers.html

I've used Paragon Backup but I'm now using Macrium Reflect Free. I recently used it to move the OS from a HDD to a SSD and it was really easy to do. Reflect is now my solution for disk imaging and backup. Note you can mount a Reflect image as a drive and recover any individual file. You can easily schedule full, differential or incremental backups plus it's free.
