Windows Easy Transfer

I would like to transfer files/settings etc from my old pc to a new one using Windows Easy Transfer. The old pc is running Windows 8.1 and I’m assuming the new one is too.

I have looked at a couple of videos online, and they clearly show that once opened you will be prompted to select what method of transfer you want to use and whether it is the old or the new pc.

I have opened Easy Transfer on my old pc and this does not happen. Instead, after the first screen informing me what will be transferred, it asks whether I have used Windows Easy Transfer to save files from my other pc. If ‘yes’ I have to connect the drive, and if ‘no’ the program closes. I get this whether I am logged into my account or as an administrator.

Would anyone be able to offer any advice how to go about saving files onto my old pc please, as this would be the first step?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the text in the window at step 2 ends at the bullet points, and I do not get any of the subsequent windows.

I just tried it(first time on 8) now I know what the problem is. On windows 8 and higher(10) it doesn't need Easy Transfer just Sync both PC's to the same account in the settings app OneDrive>Sync Settings and for files just use a external drive(better as they are backed up then too) or use OneDrive too

I'm not sure what you mean. Windows 8 comes with Easy Transfer installed so I assumed you could use it. I intended to use an external hard drive, but using Easy Transfer rather than transferring the files manually. It's also supposed to transfer the settings.

So you don't see the "next" button at the bottom? Can you drag the screen/window up or resize it? Or is something else going on?

Yes, I see the 'next' button. No, I can't resize the screen. As per my third paragraph, I don't get the subsequent screens that I'm supposed to get as per the tutorials. Instead, I get one more screen that asks whether I have saved files from my other pc and the options 'yes' or 'no'.

Thanks.

See: How to Turn On or Off Your Sync Settings Between PCs in Windows 8 and 8.1 And check out the links at the bottom of the tutorial. I looks like Easy Transfer is only there for when you upgrade from Windows 7 or earlier, that's why you can only use and not create.
The above technique in that link works well, the first time I installed Windows 10 Preview on my test laptop, I had the same settings and desktop as my Windows 8.1 update desktop.

Thanks. That's exactly the screen I get.

Having read the most recent links here, it would seem then that it's impossible to use Windows Easy Transfer, and I'll have to do it all manually (which I wanted to avoid, as it's a pain)?

You can still use software. The free Macrium Reflect it has a backup files/folders feature and a restore. Macrium Software
You would still need to tell the software which folders (i.e. Documents, Pictures, etc.) to backup.
