Word2003 on Windows 8.1

I'm old. I've been using Word2003 for my emails and journal for years. I now have Windows 8.1 and Word2003 worked fine until I installed Outlook 2013 so I could have an IMAP account for email. Now, I cannot load Word 2003 from my Office2003 disk.

I bought Word 2013 and returned it. It's complicated. I don't do desktop publishing and I didn't work well with others when I was working and I certainly don't need to collaborate now.

Can anyone suggest how to load Word 2003 or, failing that, a replacement that would read Word 2003 documents?

I've put Office 2003 on Win7 and Win8.1, no problems so far but I don't know what applications the client actually uses.

My question would be whether the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version of Outlook 2013 is installed. When I went with the 64-bit version of Office 2010 [first version to be offered as either 32-bit or 64-bit] I couldn't install FrontPage 2003, won't cohabitat with the 64-bit Office. Just to get FrontPage I'd have had to uninstall all the 64-bit Office applications and install the 32-bit versions so I went with Microsoft Expression Web 4 to edit my pages, besides it was free.

Was Word 2003 installed and in use before you put on Outlook 2013 or did you remove it? If it was installed before Outlook 2013 it should still run as before. 2007/2010 and 2013 versions can be installed as well as 2003 leaving 2003 for use whenever. I don't understand what you mean by "load Word 2003 from my Office2003 disk." Why would you be doing that? Were you running 2003 apps from CD disk? Can you not run Word 2003 from the start menu? The icons should still be there.

I have Office 2003 Professional, which includes Outlook 2003 installed and in use on my Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit system. I don't use IMAP, just POP3 but everything works, including using Word 2003 as the editor for Outlook 2003.

I am in the process of upgrading as Office 2003 (including all applications) are no longer supported by Microsoft. They were "done" the same time as Windows XP support ended. I've tried several e-mail programs and it was a toss up between Thunderbird and the Microsoft Windows Live Mail, but I'm going to move to the Windows Live Mail. I'm leaning towards Open Source for the word processor program. I don't need all the applications that came with Office.
