Hi,
I downloaded and installed office 2016, it is now asking me to activate it and a Product Key.

this is a beta so why do I need a beta key ? How do I activate Office 2016 ?

I own office 2010, I downloaded the office 2016 preview and it put office 2013 on, then I found how to put 2016 on ... now I only have a few days left of the trail before most of the features are disabled.... since this is a beta why would they be looking for a key ?

Hi there

The old links had the product already activated -- the links were removed by Ms within a few hours. Currently you need to activate via an Office 365 subscription -- I don't have nor want one of those or even Office 2013. You could try an Office 2013 key though to see if it works.

There might be a *proper* public trial later.

Cheers

You must have a subscription to Office 365 in order to run the preview. This has been a requirement of the Preview from day one.

Further, any prior versions of Office must be removed from your computer. Office 365 and Office 2010/2013 will not run side-by-side.

No key except the one for an Office 365 subscription will work, Jimbo. Even those who Previewed Office 365 before the public release had to buy their own subscription. Yep, this is a new thing with Microsoft.

As to a *proper* trial later, this is the one available and I don't think it will be subject to change. Microsoft isn't going to anger all those Beta Testers who were required to buy their own subscription in order to test O365 to this point.
