I keep getting this pop up saying I need the media player 12.2 update, and ask if I want to download, so I click on yes. then
another pop up says I need a codec....something update and to I want it, so I click yes. just then the Norton flashes a red warning sign, then it stops the download and deletes it.

are both of them bad? or just one of them bad? are the updates for real in the first place?

ok that got most of it. it had even hijacked redegit. but something is really into my system and I can't get it out. i'm getting porn in
my email and can't get it out. and many times I go into a website it sends me into a porn site, and I do mean some really nasty ones,
and not just one. I got hit with 2 of them when I tried to get in here. and when I was trying to use the soft ware I got a call from Microsoft
asking what the problem was and that is where they found my upgrades were not getting through, that something was stopping them.

but they also found that at least half of my system configurations are not working, even though everything was checked and should be up
and running. but right now the sysconfig is running on backup. they said I would need to buy new and replace everything, $80.00, $70.00
extra if i added in the backup.

If you got a call from someone that said they were from Microsoft and you let them into your system, you got scammed. MS does not call unless you ask them directly.
Perform a clean reinstall of Windows.

Nucci is right. I used to get calls from Microsoft and some other company saying my computer had a virus when it did not. Don't accept spam phone calls from people like that. That's how they get you.

It will completely erase the hard drive including programs and data. Who knows what they put into your system, this way all their crap should be gone.

Should you not wish to do so, run full scans with your antivirus program, download and run Malwarebytes Free, Hitman Pro or Highjack This and TDSSkiller.

ok, my sister has the same problem with her windows 8 laptop. but she was told there may be other viruses in there as well. in fact her email is not working. but the links from above are no longer links, they can not be clicked on. I thought I would use that hitman pro. man that really
on the problem I was having, then Malwarebytes Free, then Highjack This and TDSSkiller. is this the right order?

ok, if all else fails she will need to do a clean install - windows 8, but she may not have all the stuff needed for a clean install, so will using
the disk that came with the computer, my guess is to fix it if it crashed? I will try to use this stuff first before the clean install. thanks for your
help, my computer is working great, so far.

If the disk she has is a factory restore disk then it will put the computer back to the day when she got it.
The order of the scans does not really matter as they do a different job.
