Hello to all,
I installed an upgrade of SuperAntispyware as the user account with Admin privilege. It is checked to not start with windows. It does not start with the Admin account. CCleaner which I often us to kill startups will not allow me access without admin privilege, which when chosen shows me the Admin version of the startup items. I went into Services and killed the process and disabled the start of SAScore. It persistently haunts me still. I use it occasionally to double check antimalwarebytes. Any assistance is appreciated!

Any assistance is appreciated!

Uninstall SAS, uninstall Norton, set Windows Firewall and Defender services to auto and start them too.

Install free MBAM if you're overly paranoid about malware and use it to manually scan the system every month or so.

Use Firefox with Ghostery, TrueBlock Plus and BetterPrivacy plugins. Don't be gullible with P2P files (check comments if needed).

The best antimalware is yourself, especially since Windows 8 by default, helps the user out in a huge way.

The entry that affects SAS startup can be found at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Removing the entry from this location will prevent SAS starting with Windows for the current user. For removing startup and other entries, try Autoruns It's a lot better than CCleaner for this purpose.

Hey GMan,
You are the man! The word tenacious comes to mind, in a good way!! Norton is now compatible with Windows 8. Working good, I've used the combo of Antimalwarebyte and Superspyware and they have never failed me. I am careful about what I do.
Haven't heard of Trueblock Plus but use Adblock, noscript, ghostery, Better Privacy, HTTPSEverywhere and google share. Will look into it thanks! Take care dude!

The reasons I am so adamant about leaving all these 3rd party software off the machine are many.

As shown many times, they frequently are the cause of bsods. Even when they are not, they are the cause of hangs, shutdown hangs and other miscellaneous system problems.

In the chance they actually don't do the things as above, they can also add extreme latency to the polling procedures, as they often do. What that means is poor audio/video reliability and performance.

And this says nothing of how it slows the machine down while accessing already the slowest part of any system: the storage.

Personally how I feel, besides the malware that causes you to lose data, lots of 3rd party antivirus solutions are actually worse to have on the machine than malware itself.

That is why I always have and always will recommend MSE for 7 and below and built-in Windows Defender service for Windows 8. It is the only antimalware of them all that can not cause a bsod. Why? Because MS is excellent in that respect.

You can not find a single thread where it has caused one. And if you do, the people diagnosing it have gotten it completely wrong.

For the most part I agree with GMan - I don't use 'real-time' antivirus - however, using something like SAS or MBAM as an 'on-demand' backup scanner, for those who feel the need, is not going to cause major problems when not in use.

By the way, the developer of Trueblock Plus is suggesting people now use Adblock Lite as he doesn't have the time to develop Trueblock. Personally, I still use Adblock Plus, as I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I guess some would say it's a matter of principle...

GMan, I fully understand your viewpoint, it has been impressed upon me by many members who, like you know a lot more about this than I do. I do know that MSE and WD don't provide me with the control and the assistance I need, and I have never read a review where they were top in effectiveness. Norton and NIS have been protecting me quite successfully and they are not listed as high as say Vipre or other. Seems to change week to week. As for NIS, I think I would have preferred, to have stuck with the AV and used Comodo as the firewall. I like the ability of the software to tell me that a download is safe, and is used and how much and in Comodo if I wanted it to run or not. These are resource hogging processes, but that is why I upgraded my computers. My systems run faster than my old XP Celeron, with a whole lot more going on. In W7 have never had a BSOD. In W8 the only recurrent problem I seem to have is the shutdown locking up. I found by hitting the left key to select the destop and Alt-F4 to shutdown, this problem is now 99% gone. Oh and the defrag not working correctly unless I choose it in properties in Explorer for the drive, under tools. Is the computer running as fast as it could, obviously not, is it running fast enough for me, loads.
Could you explain the part about the AV's being worse than losing data to malware. I find that statement interesting, remember my experience level if you choose to reply. I also run Secunia, which is a major slowdown of booting. Is that also considered a bad program? I believe in layers of protection. And not to rely on one program. That is why I run MSE manually once a week. And SuperAntispyware to back up Norton and Antimalwarebytes. On W8 since MS purposely cut out MSE, even though they support and update it for W7 and it has antimalware detection IIRC, I can't run WD as manual. I would. But again the msert.exe has all the power of WD and definitions so it will do, as the backup.
The problem with SAS is just an inconvenience. My IT guy swears by Advanced System Care, been using it for 3 years for deep registry scans and optimization, defrag, duplicate file, empty folders and program deletion that MS Control panel misses regularly. I have always used third party software. Lastly and this used to be an axiom, MS is the most popular OS and is thus the major target by far of hackers. I believe they concentrate on this before getting around to Ubuntu or Apple. If anybody is attempting to crack av and antimalware, I would think MSE and WD would be the first on the list. And MS has dropped the ball many times in the past. So don't worry, be happy. I feel safe and secure as I am sure you feel safe and secure, at least as much as we can. Always appreciate your experienced perspective, truly. You can lead a horse to water, etc.

heh heh I believe you misunderstood - "besides the malware that causes you to lose data, lots of 3rd party antivirus solutions are actually worse to have on the machine than malware itself."

Malware that causes you to lose data is excluded, not included.

And yes, Calico, once again you prove your intelligence. It is a matter of principle with me. There is no such thing as "non-intrusive advertising" despite Dmitry's claim otherwise.

And I caught the maker of SAS in a lie about Malwarebytes while claiming his product is "better", called him on it in another forum, he tried to dispute it then gave up.

Calico, you don't run realtime AV, so you aren't using WD or MSE? Is there a way that you can explain it in simple terms the reasoning for this choice of yours. You are obviously knowledgeable but I can't fathom your reasoning.
Been testing Truecrypt out on the W8 machine and beginning to get the idea. Even though all my important data is already encrypted on the drive, the idea of encrypting a whole drive and using it on the fly is intriquing. My IT man uses it and says he sees no real slowdown except for games. Thinking of pulling my 1TB drive out and putting it in a USB Enclosure and using it as a separately stored encrypted data warehouse. It is suprising how little of my 500GB is being used. When money arrives I would like to go with an SSD for the primary and the 500 for encrypted data and storage. Don't know much about them but they are supposed to be fast. Anyway thanks for your time.
Tommorrow I'll dig into the SAS problem, thanks again!

It's not terribly interesting news really. With version 2 of Adblock Plus, Wladimir Palant the creator of the addon, added a feature called Non-intrusive advertising. Basically, by default, Adblock Plus started allowing certain types of adverts by default. A lot of people got quite upset about this and some went as far as to create forks of the code without this feature (Trueblock Plus/Adblock lite) even though disabling the feature is a single click option. As I mentioned earlier, those who complained, felt somewhat betrayed and now won't use Adblock Plus out of principle. You can read more Non-intrusive ads proposals and I'm sure if you search a little you'll find lots more.

It's simple really, I just don't feel the need and I'm not totally convinced they're even necessary, providing one doesn't do anything stupid. I've been online, one way or another, since 1979 and I've never had 'real-time' AV installed, I've also never had any malware. For a while, I had MBAM/SAS/HitmanPro installed as on-demand only and for best part of a year I scanned twice a week, they never found anything. I added several other 'anti-malware' tools to the mix and they also never found anything.

Basically, I'm confident that by using firefox with NoScript/Request policy and common sense I can avoid malware. It's not necessarily something I'd advocate for everyone but it works for me.

Ya, a major beef with "simply clicking the box" to disallow is machines I admin that I don't have or want access to all the time, like at my brother's house.

He (my bro) has no clue of plugins, how they work and whatnot. And of course, the plugin allows it at default until I get there to fix it.

And then there is the issue of - if he controls which ads are allowed, what is he going to allow next that I don't agree with and how much money is he on the take for? My machines don't exist to be money makers for him.

Removing the entry from this location will prevent SAS starting with Windows for the current user. For removing startup and other entries, try Autoruns It's a lot better than CCleaner for this purpose.

It is not there? Going to try Auotoruns!
