A couple of questions about Macrium Reflect

I think there is some confusion creeping in here (well I'm getting confused anyway!).

    Hopefully the following will clarify:

Here are screenshots from the Macrium program I am using (sorry if they are messy, I had to take photos with my camera as I can't use Windows' own snipping tool when booting from the usb):

Click image for larger version This first is when loading, the following show the Image, Restore and Other Tasks tabs:

Click image for larger versionClick image for larger versionClick image for larger version

These are the only things I can do.

@stringjunky: When I make an Image I can choose to autoverify but this doesn't happen until after the image is made. What I want to do is avoid the imageing failing in the first place because of bad sectors (this has happened to me more than once).

@David: I don't have an option to verify BEFORE making the image, as shown on your screenshot. I'm guessing the version I am using is a scaled down one, even from the free edition that I did have on my laptop. Are you running your full Macrium from your desktop or from a usb? I want a version that can run from usb and this is what I was recommended (in another thread).

    Does this make sense???

I'm using the paid Standard version.
    The free version is limited.

I installed it on my computer.
I know nothing about running it from a usb stick.

You can't verify an image before it is made because the verification function checks the integrity of that image!

    Makes sense Mark.

David's screenshot (post #6) actually says 'Verify the files before backup', which is essentially what I want to do - check the files are okay so the backup will succeed rather than start a backup that then fails.

But sadly doesn't appear to be possible with the usb program I am using . Oh well, we can't always have what we want!

I thought this was probably the case David. And until I asked this question I wasn't aware that the version I am using was significantly different from the free version that runs on the desktop. We live and learn!

You could run: sfc /scannow in Command Prompt before imaging.

I usually run dism.bat and chkdsk before creating a System Image, but sometimes I forget . If I forget, Windows is forgiving and still creates the Image excluding any bad blocks. But the Macrium I use from the usb goes through the process and fails. Then I have to try again.

I have seen the option to exclude bad blocks on the Macrium free version on my laptop, and was hoping this was also possible using the usb, but sadly it appears not.

I have this too Clint, but unfortunately it won't install on one of my laptops (no idea why, already tried to resolve this with no joy which is why I moved to the usb version - I wanted to make it simple for me by using the same system on both machines). The laptop that was suffering from bad blocks is the one where it will run from the desktop though.

Anyway, a new hard drive could get rid of the bad blocks problem for me. Otherwise maybe I'll just have to bite the bullet and use the desktop version on one laptop and the usb version on the other.

I am marking this as solved as I think it's gone as far as it can. Thanks to all contributors.
