How can I keep all my Software updated?

Is KC SUMo KC Softwares the best way to keep all software updated? Any better substitute?

I guess it depends on how much software you've got and what you want or need to keep an eye on.
Usually the installers themselves will check for updates but, if you want bulk monitoring Ninite is similar but that route is probably more taxing on your machine.

I check mine manually. There's maybe 3 or 4 that are prone to vulnerabilities that I check every morning, the rest I check when it's convenient.

I use Chocolatey package manager in Windows 8.1 (tutorial) and PowerShell OneGet in Windows 10 (tutorial) to install and update applications. Couldn't be easier, added bonus is I do not have to think possible third party bloatware often included in other "updaters".

Checking my app update status in Windows 8.1 just now:

Why on earth would you do that?

An example. You do install the VLC Player using Chocolatey with one simple command CHOCO INSTALL VLC. Later on you check if it's up to date with command CHOCO UPDATE VLC.

Whenever you need to reinstall it, or install it on another computer, just run command CHOCO INSTALL VLC. You do not need the installer saved locally.

Be careful what you wish for, sometimes updating software tends to invite trouble, adware etc. when I have a piece of software that works perfectly, I tend to leave it alone and turn off the automatic updater.

That's why I prefer package managers like Chocolatey and PowerShell OneGet. No surprises there, you can install dozens of apps with one command, installers run silently in the background without any bloatware. No "Next" clicking several times, no deselecting "Would you also like to install this", no nothing. Just clean installed (and updated) apps.

    Hi Kari,
First of all, great tutorial, being that I use Ubuntu on my laptop I know how much better CLI package managers are(and faster than one w/GUI). Chocolatey looks like it would be great for people that use prepaid mobile broadband and have a metered connection, being they can turn the auto updaters off and save bandwidth. Also like you said earlier you don't have the problem with bundled software either. Look at JAVA for example, you have to turn the offers off or else the bundled junk will be added w/o any user interaction on an update: Attachment 56063.
I have also noticed lately that when you go to the Authors Site to download then send you to C(rap)NET or Filehippo.
    Chocolatey looks much safer.

    It is. And so simple!

The OneGet for PowerShell will take it even further and will be native in Windows 10, I'm already using it in Windows 10 Technical Preview. You can follow the development of OneGet in Twitter, it's head developer Garret Serack maintains the Twitter account @PSOneGet. Everybody can join the open OneGet Friday meetings online (Fridays at 10 AM PST, 7 PM CET), starting again after holidays on 9th of January. Link to meetings tweeted Fridays at @PSOneGet just before the meeting.

Adobe (who else?) tried to push third party additional downloads even to OneGet as I found out, luckily the MS and OneGet team are fighting back:

From malwarebytes a real good argument for Chocolatey.
