Macrium Question

When you do a disk image in Macruim Reflect, do you have to put the image back on the original hard drive? I ask because it says saving partition. If you install a new hard drive will it make that partition on the new drive? It's confusing to me.

If you have more than one partition and want to restore onto a new drive I would use the total disk backup rather than backing up a single partition. My impression is you install an unformatted bare HD and boot the CD or USB Macrium Rescue to restore the image onto it. At least if the backed up drive has one or more OS installed.

If you search Macrium there are video tutorials and FAQs. Also searching the forums can dispel a lot of confusion. If you have a paid version of Macrium you can post on the forums. If not I believe you can still search them.

Thanks Miles, I have the free version. I have been using Aomei. I think I like that better. The part about saving the partition was what was throwing me.

I've used 3 imaging programs so far. I haven't tried Aomei yet.

You can get a full featured 8.1 pe if you use this:

Microsoft services

Unzip it, and run as admin on the .cmd file.

I save ALL local drives to usb with high compression.{About 21 GBs}
I use the paid Standard version.

May do 32 when I have the time, it is complicated to do.

What build are you running?

You can check by using dism to query the winre.wim

DISM.EXE /get-wiminfo /english /wimfile:<path_to-winre.wim> /index:1

Thanks SIW2, I've downloaded and made a recovery DVD. From what I understand, This is for a Trashed Windows system that won't start. This doesn't answer my original question, do you have to use the original hard drive to restore this image? Will it make this partition on a different hard drive?

Is your system MBR or GPT based? Is it UEFI or BIOS? If W8 and GPT/UEFI then I would back up by using the option on the top left that says "back up partitions required to restore Windows."

If it only shows one partition then the drive is MBR not GPT.

UEFI and GPT changes the game.

Thanks Miles for the reply. My system is MBR and I have Bios. I watched the video. So if you chose clone drive, It creates the partition that you saved on the new hard drive.

I uae Aomei mostly as it is small, fast, and and has a great UI. All the popular imaging programs work fine. You can restore an image to a different drive, or you could clone. I usually image then restore.

What you end up with depends on the Cloning app and the options it provides.

I regularly use Macrium Reflect to do this, and in their app, there are the options to clone a partition or clone a drive.

When I use MR to clone a drive, it's because I want ALL the partitions copied. I did this recently to "migrate" a Windows installation to a different hard drive. When the cloning was done, I swapped drives, rebooted, and everything was OK.
