Your system is using less ram because of your SSD. With an SSD your prefetch (not needed with SSDs) is turned off so windows has a lot less to put in memory. By the looks of your system specs/i7 quad,SSD,16GB RAM,nvidia), other then when you run benchmarking programs you'll never notice a difference in speed when opening/closing programs. With Samsung EVOs/PROs you can set up RAPID mode which works kind of like a RAM disk. Read this article about ram vs cpu.

    *edit* '
ok i read the article.. I guess all he needed to say was:

"All depends on whether RAM is responding quickly enough that the CPU does not have to wait for it. If RAM is not fast enough, the CPU must wait several nanoseconds every time it reads a new datum. If RAM is fast enough that this does not happen, any additional quickness will not speed anything up, because the CPU is already going as fast as it can
    "

that part makes sense.. the rest is pretty gibberish i feel.. because now what? i need to compare my speed of my ram to my cpu?

-does that mean i shouldn't use ramdisks because my ram might not be as fast as the cpu..

so you can see it's not the most helpful article except for the 1st part..

but thank you for posting that..

i agree with you, but I kind of just wanted to know if anybody used any other good programs that create ramdisks.. but yeah maybe it's pointless..

Oh OK I get it. Just a curiosity thing. I knew about the prefetch thin from my asus laptop with an SSD when I bought my Lenovo, I still up graded my RAM to 16GB and when I'm just using IE/Chrome and listening to music with WMP and my Mail, Calendar & weather live tiles my RAM doesn't get above 3.5GB really. It might spike a bit to 5GB if Maintenance kicks in that's it. Although all that RAM comes in useful when I make my monthly system image with Lenovo OneKey Recovery; it finishes a lot quicker or when I using PowerShell.

I used ramdisks many, many moons ago (like 386 -486- Pentium I era) but since than it all seemed counterproductive except in very small number of programs. Programs like Photoshop, Corel and AutoCad could use them as very fast scratch disks. As long as some program has possibility to move scratch or temp files somewhere else ramdisk can use it. Some pitfalls are, taking time to load with windows and taking some of free ram RAM away from programs that may need it for their use.
Without programs using it in right manner and having SSD, what else would you use it for ?

In any modern computer the CPU will always be faster than system RAM. That has been a fact of life in computer design since the 1980's. Even with current technology providing system RAM that could keep up with the CPU would be prohibitively expensive. Modern caching techniques have much reduced the problem but it still remains as a factor.

I am not really a fan of RAMDisks. The system cache used in any modern OS has most of the advantages of a RAMDisk with fewer problems. But with sufficient RAM it can be used to advantage. Using an SSD for storage makes this rather more difficult.

There will always be a bottleneck in performance, some factor that limits performance more than anything else. From a theoretical standpoint this is inevitable. Upgrading a component doesn't remove the bottleneck it just moves it elsewhere.

That's how (quasi) multitasking was achieved with single core processors, using empty cycles in processor while waiting for data from other parts. Using DMA bridged gap between storage and processor speeds by sending data to RAM without or with little processor work and cache in HDDs somewhat alleviated speed gap between those two. Cache, made of very fast RAM can make up for a lot of speed mismatch. Witness difference between two processors of same architecture, for instance, AMD Phenom processors are faster than Athlon of same frequency and architecture just because of larger and 3 stage cache.

thanks guys.. you just ruined my fun in using ram disks.. i guess i wont use them anymore.. just great.. haha..

i do have a ssd.. 2 actually.. so maybe it is pointless with a ramdisk.. i wasn't doing anything worthwhile with ramdisks either.. i was just playing games.. sheesh...

Look at it at bright side, if you are using "Rapid" on that Samsung SSD, it's using RAM as a cache and that's a type of ramdisk.

thats a good point count.. should i install rapid?? i wonder if you can configure it.. have you used rapid? i guess i should try it.. i just feel like i've read posts about people having problems with rapid.. so i dont really want to add in any other factors to cause problems you know..
