I installed PowerDVD 9.5 (only version I have) to see if it works but it fails badly. Software does not work and Windows MC locks up when it tries to play a DVD using the codec. Anyone know of another codec (free) that works and works well?

Did you get any warning about compatibility issue during installation? Because some of my friend had reported that issue when tried installing PowerDVD 9 to Win 7 and 8.

For codec you can try this K-Lite Mega Codec.

Recommend Media Player Classic Home Cinema, because it uses hardware acceleration for DVD, x.264 and others, just like PowerDVD.

FWIW, PowerDVD 11 and 12 both work well here, but I uninstalled 12 because it does things that I don't like that I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to stop. 11 is the goods after all my tweaks to make it light.

Agree with 11 Version. I did see it work nicely for 3 D Movies.
