    Unable to uninstall an app

I'm using Win 8.1, an internet service provider technician installed an app that I can't remove, I don't know what the app does, but it's listed in the installed programs under control panel, and also there's a folder under Program Files (x86) in C, whenever I tried to run the apps, it just said "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application". I tried to remove the apps from the control panel, it does nothing. Is there a way to remove it manually and make sure everything is removed?

    Thanks for you comment/suggestion
    Michael

    Hello Michael,

In addition, you might also see if you may be able to uninstall the app using an elevated command prompt.

Thanks David for your reply and sorry for the late reply, could you please tell me how to proceed with take ownership? I tried to go to the Control Panel > Uninstall Programs, and the only possibility is Uninstall programs. I also went to Start > Programs > right click on the app > select Uninstall, another possibility I went to the app's folder in C, then select Uninstall, and all of them gave me the same error: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application". So I can't see how the take ownership will help, it does not seem to be an ownership problem.

Thanks Brink for your reply and sorry for the late reply. I used the command prompt as suggested, but it did not list the app that I'm thinking in removing, does it mean that the app was not installed correctly? Any other way to remove it? I remember when it happened with XP, I simply deleted the app's folder in C and remove any links in register, is it the same with 8.1?

Does it have an .exe file, among others ?

A screenshot of it would help.

Just right click something & choose Take Ownership.

@ David: thanks for your reply, I see how to take ownership, sorry I do not have any longer the files, since I can't uninstall it, I just went ahead and removed it by brutal force (deleting the folder, removing from Control Panel and cleaning the registry). I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it, I used to do this way in XP and 8.1 is new to me, but so far I have no other glitches from the removal, let's give it some time to see if there's any ill effect. Thanks again for your reply.

Back in the day, there were a lot of shared DLL files & just deleting something was liable to take a needed DLL with it.

The other day I deleted all but 1 App & gained 2 GBs of space.
I put them in the Recycle Bin until I was sure that there were no problems.

David: thanks for the tips, I'll make sure to keep the Recycled Bins safe for few months.
