where can i download microsoft office 2013 for free?

Give LibreOffice a try. It's free and has many of the MS Office features. It can read and write the latest MS Office files. It's the only Office Suite I use.

MS Office is not free. If it were I would have it. Libre Office is an alternative and what I use with Win 8.1. I'm still agonizing over what to replace my old Office 2003 on my Win 7 installation. I may go to Libre Office there too, except I can't find a suitable alternative to Outlook 2003.

If you need/want what Outlook has to offer, I don't know of a product free or otherwise, that is so good at it.

Think about Office365.

The personal one user-one computer version can be had on Amazon for less than $50/year. Includes all of Office 2013, 1Tb of cloud storage and I thinks some Skype telephone minutes too.

The Home Premium version for 5 users/computers is about $70/year on Amazon. It includes all of Office 2013, 1Tb of cloud storage for each user and 60 minutes of Skype telephone minutes also.

Both are real bargains now imo.

$50 a year is ridiculous for my uses. I don't need full Office (Word and Outlook are basically all I use), and I don't use or need cloud storage. I refuse to buy Microsoft's subscription type products. If they can't sell it to me at a one time price then I'm not buying it, as its only for my limited use (I'm retired and for personal home use only).

Of the E-mail programs I've tried, including Microsoft Live Mail, Thunderbird is winning. Thunderbird even imported all my Outlook folders and address book automatically. Everything in Microsoft Live Mail is manual, it won't automatically import (Like Outlook 2003 automatically imported my Outlook Express data when I installed Office 2003).

Depending on how you want to define free, if you had a MSDN subscription you could probably download Office 2013 for "free". You'd pay a whole lot more for the MSDN subscription than just buying Office outright, but as I said, depends on how you want to define free.

I'm retired also, have been for about 10 years. I mostly use just Excel and Outlook with a smattering of Word thrown in now and then. I love the cloud storage! All my data will fit on any of my devices and the cloud just fine. And that means that if I have to re-install or otherwise put data in danger, I have backups all over the place including the home and outside the home. Great concept and great in practice.

All that said, the online version of Word may be just your cup of tea. It isn't as full featured as the installed on, but it isn't a slouch either. And you can use it with OneDrive for the files, which will also be on your local machine too.

I've used Thunderbird and MLM and found both lacking or poor performing, even for my relatively simple use/needs for programs of that type. Outlook is just so much better.

I've found that the outlook.com online is good enough and similar enough that I don't even give a second thought to much of this.

Your help is very much appreciated

To answer the simple question, Microsoft Office is NOT free. There are many ways to legally get a copy for a reasonable price. Be it through your company, or organization you work for, or if you're a student, at a discount price as long as you have a valid .edu e-mail address.

As a college student I got a four year student subscription of Office 365 for 80 bucks which allows you to install it on 2 PC's and a smartphone.

And some schools even older versions of Office for free (mine does), but this is with Microsoft's blessing.

Other than that, it ain't free.

Peace

Typically Windows versions of Office have odd year numbers (2003, 2007, 2013) and are spaced 3-4 years apart. It's the Mac versions that customarily have the even numbered year numbers. Not sure if there was an Office 2014, but if there was, it was likely a Mac release.

With the Office 365 thing, it's probably even money if there will ever be another old style release. Rather than a one time fee, Microsoft (and more importantly, it's shareholders) would rather see a steady stream of income in the form of a subscription model. Wouldn't be at all surprised if Office 2013 was the last perpetually licensed version of Office to ever be on offer.

I think Office 10 was Office 97. Pretty sure Office XP was 12. Unless you meant Office 2010. In which case, nothing happened to it, but it was the odd man out, so didn't mention it.

Microsoft Office has two version numbers, one is for the suite of applications for Windows such as Office 2000, Office XP/2002, Office 2003, Office 2007, Office 2010, Office 2013. My Office for Macintosh has suite versions 2008 and 2011. Looking in the Help, About will show versions numbers for the individual applications such as the 2-digit 10, 12, 14, 15, etc., there was no 13 for a version number. Going back further Office 4.5 actually had Word 6.

You can use the Office programs free online thru OneDrive - except for Access - just click the Create button, and Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint are available. If you are one of the 80% of people who use less than 20% of the Microsoft Office features, then this should be fine for you.
