    Build it yourself?

I assume that I can't actually use it, without downloading a stack of other software (e.g. Visual Studio 2K8)?

That rules it out as a tool for ordinary Windows users.
Having to build it yourself is too much like Linux.

I wasted a couple of hours the other day, trying to install a new version of a media player in Ubuntu.

There was a constant stream of:

    • Complaints about missing items (of course it never named the specific missing items).
    • Swearing from me.

    OMG, I hate using IE!
Does anyone know how to disable "smart selection" in IE9 & IE10?

    Build what yourself?

Ivo's program is just a small download. It will take you a few minutes to customise your start menu entries, skins, etc.

I downloaded the zip (source files) instead of the exe.

I was only planning to test "Classic Shell" out (for possible future usage - W8 RC).
W8 CP is still basically unusable, since it refuses to correctly install my sound driver.

Iehnerus, I'm a dedicated Firefox user, but I have found IE 10 to be better. Give it a chance.

uh oh. When I click the Start button, nothing happens. I deleted the program and re-installed it, and still nothing happens.

What happens when you press the Win key?
Also, check your settings. Did you select that Left Click does nothing?

When I press the Win key, it takes me to the Metro desktop (which is what I ant it to do). However, I cannot get the Start button itself to respond to anything.

It's OK for viewing web pages.
It's horrible if you need to input info.

    I hate:
    The non-customisable GUI.
The "smart selection" (I always turn it off in Word).

I hate the orange button in FF too.

I got my New York Yankees Start menu up in the house, with Classic Shell!

When it is not pressed on, it doesn't glow like above (ignore Aero color differences - I have it set to change with the current application in Windows, on the fly):

    It should be popular

OK, now that I have the correct installer, I can say that this is a very nice utility.

I can foresee a large number of downloads, if MS continues on its current course.

I hope you are earning some "click" income for this Ivo.

Hey guys, I have a rather st**id problem. I installed Windows 8.1 on my new lap top a few days ago (Thanks Superfly and popeye). Then I wanted to make it look and function more like Windows 7, so I installed Classic Shell and got my Start button to look and function as it does on Windows 7...
Classic Shell in Software and Apps
Hi With the imminent arrival of windows 8.1.1 update (April 7 2014) a question has crossed my mind, I have used classic shell so as to help me over the no start menu, my simple question is should I uninstall this now in ANTICIPATION of a new start menu from Microsoft or is this wishful thinking ...

Classic Shell in Customization
I'm using Classic shell (Welcome to Classic Shell) I can't see me ever using the Metro Start screen.
We have released a skin for Classic Shell. It looks good in Windows 8, much better than default skins. The skins shipping as part of Classic Shell do not match the look of the Windows 7 Start Menu or the style of Windows 8. Many settings also need to be heavily tweaked to get a more closer...
